Earlier today, Steve got the chance to visit the set of one of the best shows on television, NBC’s Community, and I’m insanely jealous. He was on set to help promote the season two DVD, which hits stores September 6th, and season three of the show which premieres on NBC Thursday September 22nd at 8/7c. While he’ll have the full report/video intervuew from the set up at a later date, castmember (and scene-stealer) Donald Glover was asked about the new black Spider-Man that was unveiled as part of the Ultimate comic book series and we wanted to get what he said up for you now.

As you may or may not know, when Sony was casting The Amazing Spider-Man, a fairly large “Donald Glover for Spider-Man” campaign was launched to try and get him cast in the reboot.  Obviously Andrew Garfield nabbed the role, but Glover revealed today that writer Brian Bendis actually based his new black Spider-Man on seeing Glover in Spider-Man pajamas in an episode of the show.  Hit the jump to see what he had to say.  And if you’re not watching Community, get your shit together and tune in this fall.  You’re sorely missing out.

Here’s the transcript and further down you can watch the video.

Question: Obviously last year you were famously wrapped up in the “Donald Glover for Spider-Man” campaign, and now we’ve got a black Spider-Man in one version of continuity that some say looks a little bit like you. Have you been speaking to Marvel about anything that we should know about?

Donald Glover: (laughs) Look I think for a long time people know that I have an iron grip over there, I’m very strong at the Marvel Comics (laughs) people really respect me over there. No, [comic book writer Brian Bendis] got the idea from seeing a Community episode actually, cause I was in like Spider-Man pajamas, which I thought was pretty great. It’s funny, people say he looks like me, I don’t see it that much, but I know he was influenced by me. I can’t wait to have grandkids and be like, “Yup, that’s me.” It’s really cool. The nerd respect I’ve gotten is quite large. Also the hate mail is pretty great, the hate tweets are pretty great, “You killed Peter Parker!”

But you’re not necessarily gonna show up to Andrew Garfield’s house?

Glover: And be like “Hey,” just drop the new cover there. No, no. But it’s pretty great.
