Some of Hollywood’s most iconic practically-achieved characters as of late have been brought to life by Doug Jones (Hellboy).  Probably most well known for his portrayal of Abe Sapien in the Hellboy movies, Jones has also played the Silver Surfer in the Fantastic Four sequel, as well as characters in Pan’s Labyrinth, Doom and Men in Black. Jones will next star as a party-crashing alien in Fox’s Neighborhood Watch, the Akiva Schaffer (Hot Rod) directed comedy starring Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill.

The plot of Neighborhood Watch is about a group of dads who join the watch to escape the pressures of their families, only to stumble upon an intergalactic plot to destroy the world. Hit the jump for more.

Casting addition of Jones via THR. Rounding out the cast of Neighborhood Watch are the recent additions of Rosemarie DeWitt (Rachel Getting Married) as Stiller’s wife; Richard Ayoade (writer/director of Submarine) as Jamarcus, a divorcee in the group; Will Forte (MacGruber) as Sergeant Bressman; Billy Crudup (Almost Famous) as a “creepy and weird neighbor” and Nicholas Braun (Prom) in an undisclosed role. Shawn Levy (Real Steel) is producing and has called Neighborhood Watch one of the “top three funniest scripts” he’s ever read.

As the casting news is about Doug Jones, it’s easy to assume that his role will feature heavy make-up and use of prosthetics (although the man does a fine job acting as just himself, thank you very much.) Having just completed Real Steel, Shawn Levy is quite comfortable working with a mixture of practical and CG effects. Since Legacy Effects (Iron Man, The Avengers, Avatar) will be building the creatures for Neighborhood Watch, you might want to check out Steve’s related interview with Levy here. And if that’s not enough creature features for you, Christina has an interview with Levy about Legacy and their work on Real Steel here.
