Dr-Horribles-Sing-Along-Blog-slice

The popular internet hit Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, created by Joss Whedon in 2008, has been available online and through streaming since its inception, but to continue preaching its gospel to the masses, The CW will be broadcasting it in full October 9th starting at 9PM.  The three-part musical stars Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) as the title character, Nathan Fillion (Castle) as his nemesis Captain Hammer, and Felicia Day (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) as their shared love interest.

Though Whedon had hoped to shop his project around to a bigger venue at the time in order to pay the cast and crew (who worked on it for free), subsequent DVD sales have reportedly paid those bills.  Still, the popularity of Dr. Horrible continues both in book form (with essays from the main actors, the shooting script, sheet music, etc) as well as in college and cult theaters, so while this broadcast may feel behind the times, it shouldn't.  Dr. Horrible is certainly a classic.  For details on the CW broadcast, hit the jump.

The series was possibly the only positive thing (for viewers, anyway) to come out of the 2008 Writer's Guild strike (remember that? Dark days).  For those unaware of the plot:

“DR. HORRIBLE’S SING-ALONG BLOG” MAKES ITS TELEVISION DEBUT ON TUESDAY, OCTOBER 9, 9-10 PM ON THE CW

Joss Whedon’s acclaimed “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog,” starring Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion and Felicia Day,” will make its television debut on Tuesday, October 9 (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET) on The CW.

Created as a three-part online musical in 2008 by Joss Whedon (“The Avengers,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”), the series stars Neil Patrick Harris (“How I Met Your Mother”) as Billy, A.K.A. Dr. Horrible, a budding super villain whose plans for world domination continually go awry.  His two goals: getting accepted into the Evil League of Evil, and working up the guts to speak to his laundromat crush Penny (Felicia Day, “The Guild”).  The only thing standing in Billy’s way is his superhero arch nemesis, Captain Hammer (Nathan Fillion, “Firefly,” “Castle”).  With one big score, Billy could get into the E.L.E. and earn the respect of Penny, but only if he can keep her away from the dashing Captain Hammer…

Directed by Joss Whedon, “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog” was written by Maurissa Tancharden, Jed Whedon, Joss Whedon and Zack Whedon, with music by Jed Whedon and Joss Whedon.
