According to producer Alissa Phillips, Dracula Untold, a movie where Dracula (Luke Evans) uses an army of bats to punch the ground, will be the first entry into the studio's upcoming Universal Monsters crossover universe.  Although we previously reported that overseers Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek Into Darkness) and Chris Morgan (Fast & Furious 6) would be starting with a remake of The Mummy, Phillips told HeyUGuys that her movie is kicking off the series.

Depending on the success of Dracula Untold, I can see this going either way.  The Mummy doesn't even have a director yet, although it does have a release date set for April 22, 2016.  At this point, there's no reason Dracula couldn't pop in to say, "Hey, Mummy," thus showing that a universe is being built, and then The Mummy makes its contribution to series.  But if Dracula Untold flops, then there's no reason to keep it canon unless there's something inside Dracula Untold that connects it to future movies like Frankenstein's Monster showing up to tell Dracula he's become part of a much bigger universe.  Hit the jump for Phillips quote regarding Dracula Untold, which opens October 10th.

Here's what Phillips told HeyUGuys:

I was really excited to be part of that. When we started out we weren’t [part of the series], but then we found out that they were going to do it.

Working with Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan who are very much a part of creating The Mummy and the other ones…it’s been fun to be a part of that.
