It would have been nice to see Dredd make a showing at this year’s Comic-Con, but we’re still getting a look at the new adaptation of the 2000 A.D. comic Judge Dredd.  We recently got the first image of Karl Urban as the title character and now Empire Magazine has three more stills from the flick.  One of the shots is the first look at Olivia Thirlby (Juno) as rookie Judge Cassandra Anderson.  Not much is known about the plot other than it will be more faithful to the comic than the 1995 Sylvester Stallone film, and that Lena Headey (Game of Thrones) is playing the villain. [Update: We've now added the Empire cover which shows Karl Urban frowning like there's no tomorrow.] [Update 2: We've added six more images including one of Headey as the villainous clan leader Ma-Ma]

Hit the jump to check out the images.  Dredd opens in 3D on September 21, 2012.

Here’s the official synopsis for Dredd:

DREDD takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot – if necessary. The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and the frenetic vision of director Peter Travis bring DREDD to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film that returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s revered comic strip.

    Gorgeous girl

Do we get an R rated love scene in this one? I can’t tell by the photo if she is as hot as Diane Lane was. Wow, what an ass on Diane Lane. Her in spandex was my favorite part of that film.

  • Sexy Devil

She’s 24 years old which is the perfect age for a rookie. It would be awesome is karl urban banged her hard and deep with his helmet on. :)

    I’m sold!!!
This seems to have that Dirty Harry retro feel that was present in the first issues of the comics. Gritty!

Though, I would still love to see an incarnation of Dredd using maybe Mocap featuring Judge Death etc and that more fantasy big chinned style in the main Dredd style comics.

The Sly version that nearly nailed it except for the cheesy dialogue and Sly taking his helmet off throughout the whole film. (The scenery, feel and other outfits etc in that flick were spot on.)

Great that theyre including Anderson (a psychic) into this seemingly realistic take. Hope Mean Angel and Hammerstein are in this.

the costume looks even more ridiculous than the Stallone film.

    • DamnBASTERD

If only the helmet covered his nose (or, you know, fit his head).

      • Agent_Black

The designs were given the thumbs up by Judge Dredd creator John Wagner with concept art from 2000 AD artist Jock, but what the fuck do they know about how Dredd should look, right?

      • DamnBASTERD

It’s one thing to look at an arbitrary helmet and give thumbs up. It’s another to actually see it on film on the lead actors’ head. What can I say, I have eyes that see and I’m not crazy about what they’re showing me.

The helmet is like one full size too big, otherwise it would be fine. There’s an empire cover with Urban photoshopped (oddly) in front of Batman and Spiderman, and it looks 3 sizes too big, with a ridic exaggerated frown..it literally looks more like a Mad Magazine caricature than a serious attempt at a costume… was excited, now VERY worried about the film.

    • Terry

Yeah, the helmet is stupid looking!!!

    Looks promising anyway……
There were alot of great stories from that comic book. It would be great to see that story arc about the block war turning into a city wide war. A judge from a rival city cominated the water supply to undermine the city’s defenses by making the city make war with itself so it could be easily attacked with missiles. That might make a interesting movie.
Or maybe just simple detective, murder mystery might work since Dredd gives it an edge every time.
Here’s to hoping it gets done right…………

This movie is going to be the Judge Dredd movie we’ve all hoped for! Those photos are AMAZING- especially Olivia Thirlby holding the machine gun- and the producers behind the movie know exactly what Dredd should be, which is ‘Dirty Harry’ in Fritz Lang’s ‘Metropolis’, and are determined to do it right… dirty, gritty, grimy, greasy, visceral, ultraviolent butt-kickin’ action!!!

I have a question: How cam they see through the X of the helmet ? They just lose 50% of the FOV.

  • Alex

Looks like a crap fan made movie, wtf are judges in the 22nd century doing using MP5′s ffs, where the F*** is Dredds’ chin that Karl Urban looks like some no chin English toff. Yet another huge disappointment.
