The first trailer for Pete TravisDredd has gone online.  I know filming was already well underway (if not wrapped) by the time The Raid came out, but thems the breaks.  The trailer does a good job of setting up the conflict, and while there’s the inevitable speed-ramping, at least there’s a plot point to explain it (the drug called Slo-Mo, which is what I think Zack Snyder takes every morning).  I’m not sure if this trailer is enough to get naysayers past the 1995 Sylvester Stallone flop, I’m still excited to see Karl Urban as the eponymous judge/jury/executioner.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Olivia Thirlby and Lena HeadeyDredd opens in 3D on September 21st.

Here’s the official synopsis for Dredd:

Dredd takes place on a fictional Earth created as a result of the Atomic Wars. Survivors of this period are living in Mega-Cities, which protects its citizens from the Cursed Earth, a radioactive desert environment populated by mutants. The main story takes place in Mega-City One, where the police who are now called judges have the power to use police brutality to some extent to fight extreme murders. One man, Judge Dredd (Karl Urban), a senior law enforcement officer, teams up with a cadet called Judge Anderson (Olivia Thirlby) to track down a terrorist organization lead by Ma-Ma (Lena Headey), who is responsible for selling a reality-altering drug called Slo-Mo.

  1. the Zack Snyder comment made me lol
the movie seems ok, hope its better than this trailer though!
if only they had the 1995 dread movie budget…….
hopefully it goes well on the box office and gets a sequel (with a bigger budget)

  2. Something tells me the script writers saw a very early cut of The Raid and didn’t think it would become as mainstream as it has so thought they’d be able to get away with ‘borrowing’ the premise.

It’s too close to be mere coincidence.

    • The Raid was the first thing that came to mind when I saw this trailer. Too much coincidence indeed.

    • Dredd was in production before The Raid, so unfortunate for them that Raid beat them to it. Serves them right for taking so long to get a trailer out. But if its kick ass then it should be all good

  3. “The drug called Slo-Mo, which is what I think Zack Snyder takes every morning.”

    Truer words were never said…

    LOL

  4. Have we learned nothing from the Batman trilogy about stupid, gravely voices? IT DOESN’T WORK!! Stupid voice and cheeky one-liners, and over production is a classic recipe for a bad movie. Thanks for nothing Hollywood.

  5. It looks worthy of a mindless theater experience, I just hope Rod Schnieder makes a cameo in this movie.

  6. Blatant rip-off of The Raid: Redemption. S’okay though, I’m sure no amount of slowed-down fake-ass action schemes can compare to the Raid scene where the hero dude takes on 4 machete-wielding guys with his bare hands.

The Raid: Redemption will kick your ass, stomp it, shoot it, napalm it, throw it out the window and then eat the ashes. It’s that effin’ good…

  7. Re: The Raid – Dredd actually finished filming well over a year ago and was intially due for a DEC 2011 release however it has been in post production since.

Pretty sure the premise for Dredd was released long before The Raid.

  8. I would also like to pile on to the LOL’s directed towards the snide remark at Zack Snyder.

oh, and I AM THE LAW!

  9. i am hoping the finished movie is better than this trailer … i like karl and lena a lot … they might save the movie :)

  10. Doesn’t look terrible. Urban would be the only reason to check it.

I just don’t see people clamoring for another Judge Dredd film. Like the alleged Snooki sex tape, I ask you, who is this made for?

    • American Psycho
      Dogma
      Monster’s Ball
      Confidence
      Hotel Rwanda
      High Tension
      Grizzly Man
      Lord of War
      Hard Candy
      Akeelah and the Bee
      The Descent
      The US vs John Lennon
      3:10 to Yuma
      Rabbit Hole
      Warrior
      The Cabin in the Woods

      so……yeah.

  11. The effects in the first movie were way better , let me ask this question? How hard is it to come up with an original movie? Everything is a remake wtf? Do they need people to write or what ? I’m not a writer but how hard is it to make something new and exciting in Hollywood ? Why do the feel the need to go back and vomit up bullshit ? And this really only the case with action movies or old summer blockbusters ! I wanna see a remake of movie that I’ve never seen before . If Hollywood wants to do remake of movies that are shitty not movies that are good . For example Arthur , good original abortion of a remake .Christ almighty that is all. Ps this movie will suck

    • You know Judge Dredd is a comic right? That the 1995 film was someone’s take on the material, same as this new film is someone else’s take, so its not a remake, its a reinterpretation, get me fool?
Id like to add that the original Judge Dredd comic creator John Wagner was involved in the production of this NEW Dredd film, so it will be more true in tone and spirit to the comics than that god awful (yet very fun and amusing) Stallone version. So il say wait and see it before passing “judgement” on it, if you have a problem with it no one is forcing you to watch it ;)

  12. POS. It was tedious waiting for something to make sense. This movie will fail fail fail. Lots of slow mo sh** ala Max Payne bullet time. I am not going to waste $9.00 on this.

  13. Rah-rah police state. One big war on drugs?

Prediction: In the last scene, Dredd is forced to take the new drug, and it all plays out in bullet time where Dredd messes up everybody’s couches.

    • nope! he wouldn’t be Judge Dredd if he had to take a drug to do his job, kind of remove the point of him doing what he does ;)

      • Fool! If Dredd is captured, strapped to a chair, and injected, he is still the LAW!

  14. Couldn’t really make out much with the poor bootleg quality and all the fast moving action but oh well

  15. Here’s the thing…I grew up on Judges back in my heyday of comic collecting & was always AMAZED with the characters & their capabilities. I always loved Judge Death & couldnt wait for a flick version of all involved…but I’m beginning to believe that the Dredd Universe just aint filmable.

Could be wrong…but to date nothing seems to have worked.

  16. The older you get the quicker your life flashes before your eyes, one minute you’re na indestructible kid, the next an amorous teen then you get a job and live for the weekend and before you know it you’re in your 20′s then 30′s getting tired and speeding inexorably toward old age and death.

What’s wrong with a drug that makes you feel like time is slowed down? Isn’t that botox and collogen? face lifts and plastic surgery?

Been looking forward to this for so long and they have to ruin it with an easy target in the dreaded DRUG DEALER!!!

Like alcohol never made people do daft shit…. fecking politics eh?

  17. Not a good sign when the press blurb has spelling errors, I’d say (lead/led), nor when it takes the trouble to explain that the setting of the film — i.e., the mega-cities that rose after the Atomic Wars — is a “fictional Earth.”

  18. The production design does look pretty cool, though, and the Slo-Mo drug seems to offer some cool cinematic possibilities.

  19. Are u people kidding? This looks totally fine, and more or less an accurate portrayal of the comics. I’ll see it for some fun action.

  20. Looks awesome more like the comics and hopefully dredd never takes off his helmet and gets the eagle shoulder badge
