More news from the American Film Market (AFM) as FilmDistrict has acquired the North American distribution rights to Nicolas Winding Refn’s slick new thriller Drive, starring Christina Hendricks (Mad Men), Carey Mulligan (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps) and Ryan Gosling (Half Nelson). This is only the second film under the FilmDistrict banner, the new company founded by GK Films’ Graham King and Tim Headington --- they recently nabbed the Dennis Quaid/Helen Hunt vehicle Soul Surfer.

Here’s the official synopsis:

“Drive” is the story of a Hollywood stunt driver by day (Gosling), a loner by nature, who moonlights as a top-notch getaway driver-for-hire in the criminal underworld. He finds himself a target for some of LA’s most dangerous men after agreeing to aid the husband of his beautiful neighbor, Irene (Mulligan). When the job goes dangerously awry, the only way he can keep Irene and her son alive is to do what he does best—Drive!

According to Deadline, Drive is currently in production in Los Angeles, with roughly two weeks remaining on its schedule for planned end of summer 2011 release. The 30-million dollar film boasts a supporting cast that includes Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Oscar Isaac (Robin Hood) and Albert Brooks (Out of Site). Refn is best known for his Pusher trilogy.
