Warner Bros. has unveiled the very first Dunkirk trailer for writer/director Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated film. The World War II action-thriller is based on an original screenplay by Nolan that chronicles the evacuation of Dunkirk during the British military operation that saved 330,000 lives as Allied soldiers were surrounded by German forces.
We’re almost a year away from Dunkirk, but that’s the power of Christopher Nolan’s brand. Warner Bros. can sell this movie on his name and his past work with only a few images from his upcoming film. What’s even more impressive is that even though the film stars Oscar nominees like Tom Hardy and Kenneth Branagh as well as recent Oscar winner Mark Rylance, they’re not mentioned at all. This is Nolan’s show, and that’s enough to get people to perk up their ears at a World War II story that may not have normally grabbed their attention.
Of course, as time goes on and the marketing campaign ramps up, we’ll get mentions and looks at the leading actors (who aren’t even highlighted in this trailer!), but that can wait. This is an announcement trailer, and while many of us already knew that Nolan was at work on this film, plenty of people who don’t follow film daily will be excited to learn about this development. Presumably Warner Bros. is going to attach this trailer to Suicide Squad, and it’s a solid introduction to Nolan’s next feature.
Watch the first Dunkirk trailer below. The film also stars Cillian Murphy, Aneurin Barnard, James D’Arcy, Jack Lowden,Barry Keoghan, Tom Glynn-Carney, and Harry Styles. Shot entirely on IMAX 65mm film and 65mm large-format photography, Dunkirk opens in theaters on July 21, 2017.
Here’s the official synopsis for Dunkirk:
Dunkirk opens as hundreds of thousands of British and Allied troops are surrounded by enemy forces. Trapped on the beach with their backs to the sea they face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in.
