Review by Louis Lesko

;

There is a funny moment in The Dukes of Hazzard, it is the “Al Unser, Jr. Story” as narrated by Lawrence Fishburn.; That’s funny!; Sadly the other 105 minutes of the movie are so moronic that it kind of kills the one good joke.

;

For those of you a little light on your TV trivia, the Dukes of Hazzard is based on a TV show of the same name that ran from 1979 to 1985.; The movie stars Johnny Knoxville, from “Jackass,” Seann William Scott, from “American Wedding,” and Jessica Simpson.; It’s a comedy about two cousins from Hazzard, GA that are “closer than brothers”. They run around in a 1969 Dodge Charger named “General Lee” delivering moonshine thoughtfully brewed by their uncle Jesse.; Willie Nelson plays Uncle Jesse and Burt Reynolds plays the villain Boss Hogg.; How they got roped into doing this movie is a mystery that will surely be solved on an upcoming episode of “True Hollywood Stories“.

;

The plot, I use that word liberally, centers on Bo and Luke Duke and the General Lee.; Boss Hogg has finagled a way to illegally procure Uncle Jesse’s farm as well as several other farms in the surrounding area that seem to have large coal deposits beneath them.; His aim is to turn Hazzard county into a strip mine.; The movie follows the boys and their car as they hoot and holler through several scenes of discovering the evil plot and hatching a plan to thwart it.; Many of these scenes involve car chases and jumps with the police in hot pursuit.; In one scene of the movie, because of a mishap at a geology lab, the boys find their faces blackened with soot.; Looking like white folk parodying black folk, the movie, wouldn’t ya know it, takes the boys and their confederate flag adorned car into an African American neighborhood.; I wonder if the director and the producers were asking themselves where the belly laugh was at the test screenings.

Jessica Simpson plays Daisy Duke. ;She has few scenes prancing around in short shorts, so called “Daisy Dukes” from the TV series.; But sadly it’s not enough screen time to justify watching the rest of this turgid disaster.; For those of you who are fashion conscious there is an extra feature on the DVD where they talk about the drawn out and mind wrenching decision to add or de;le;te;, I’m not kidding, centimeters of fabric.; As to the rest of the special features watching them will reinforce your opinion that some movies are better left as three minute trailers.

;

The technical aspects of the DVD are not really worth mentioning save the fact that the opening scene of the movie has some lip synching issues that reminded me of the old kung fu movies that were dubbed into English.; But honestly it is my sincere hope that you’ll cherish the 106 minutes of your life that I’m saving you by dissuading you from experiencing this DVD.
