While the Blu-ray format hasn’t been as successful as many of the studios would like, more and more people are making the HD switch and 2009 should be the year prices start to really come down on the next-gen format. Of course the only reason to upgrade to a new format is the content provided, so one of the reasons people have been slow to adopt Blu-ray is the lack of classic movies on the HD format (of course the format war didn’t help).

But with the amount of catalog titles released in 2008, the 4th quarter saw dramatic growth in Blu-ray player sales and movies sold. Now that we’re in 2009 and the studios have started announcing more catalog titles, maybe this is the year the format breaks into Middle America.

And one of the studios with a lot of classic titles is Walt Disney, and they’ve just announced that some of their 2009 releases on the Blu-ray format. If you’re a fan of Pixar movies…the studio has finally announced that “Monsters, Inc.” and “A Bug’s Life” will be available on Blu-ray sometime in 2009! While I’d really like “The Incredibles” and the “Toy Story” movies, I think those will be their 2010 releases…

Of course the Pixar movies aren’t the only titles coming, as Disney has also announced “High School Musical 3: Senior Year” (February 17), Disney’s animated classic “Pinocchio: 70th Anniversary Platinum Edition” (March 10) and “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Platinum Edition” in October. Also we’re getting “Pulp Fiction”, “Sin City”, “Good Will Hunting” and a lot more classics. In addition, most of their releases will come with the now standard digital copy of the movie for consumers to enjoy anytime on their Mac, PC or compatible portable devices.

Finally, here are some of the other catalog releases coming…look for more 2009 Blu-ray info as soon as we get it.

“Pretty Woman” (Touchstone Pictures) on February 10; “High School Musical Remix Edition” (Walt Disney Pictures) on February 17; “Monsters Inc.” (Disney/Pixar); “A Bugs Life” (Disney/Pixar); “Microcosmos” (Miramax); “Rounders 10th Anniversary Edition” (Miramax); “Lost: The Complete First and Second Seasons” (ABC); “Sin City” (Miramax); “Miracle” (Walt Disney Pictures); “Sling Blade” (Miramax); “The Greatest Game Ever Played” (Walt Disney Pictures); “Pulp Fiction Special Edition” (Miramax); “Good Will Hunting Special Edition” (Miramax) and many more to follow in 2009.
