After the "Battlestar Galactica" prequel "Caprica" was picked up as a series last December, it looked like the two hour pilot episode that sold the show might sit unseen until the broadcast series was ready to hit the Sci-Fi airwaves in 2010. It seemed a shame to make fans wait, what with the mound of momentum they have built during the last run of "Galactica", so the studio found a way around the wait.
"Caprica" is now set to launch, in an uncut format, exclusively on DVD this April 21st. That's right - "Galactica" fans will have barely gotten over the emotional roller-coaster of the show's final season when an entirely NEW roller coaster will enter the picture.
Set 50 years before the first Cylon war, "Caprica" will explore the people and the technology that would ultimately lead to the destruction of the Twelve Colonies, not to give anything away… The new series stars Eric Stoltz, Polly Walker, Esai Morales and Paula Malcomson.
Here is more from Universal's press release:
"Ever since fans first caught wind of the 'Battlestar Galactica' prequel Caprica, they have been eagerly following its development," said Mark Stern, Executive Vice President, Original Programming for SCI FI & Co-Head Original Content, Universal Cable Productions. "We wanted to give them a chance to see the pilot in its original form and experience the prequel to the BSG story while that series' finale was still ringing in their ears. It also affords the creative team an unprecedented chance to get viewers feedback before production on the 'Caprica' series begins this summer."
That part about wanting feedback is probably not bullshit – any fan of the "BG" podcasts knows that Ronald D Moore and David Eick actually pay attention to the fan's online chatter.
Universal will begin production on the "Caprica" series in the summer of 2009 in Vancouver for a 2010 television premiere on the Sci-Fi Channel. The DVD of "Caprica" is priced at $26.98 and preorders close March 3, 2009.
