The nightmare behind Blu-Ray movies is the dark and disturbing knowledge that any visually stunning movie you own will probably have to be repurchased in high-def even though it's more expensive. That knowledge is compounded by the even more disturbing fact that within five to ten years, you'll just download the high-def version because you hate carting your thousands of Blu-Ray DVDs around and you keep investing thousands of dollars in obsolete formats even though the film remains the same.
That's not to say that it isn't worth it. Just as most Blu-Ray owners just shelled out some cash for "The Matrix" Blu-Ray DVD, they will undoubtedly give New Line (or Warner Bros. or Wingnut or whoever owns the property) whatever the company asks for when it comes to the Blu-Ray edition of "The Lord of the Rings" Trilogy. Amazon.com currently has a listing for the product. There is no date of release nor any description of special features. This is for the theatrical editions of the films and not the extended editions because why would they let you buy something once when they know you'll buy it twice? But with a list price of $99.98, you can pre-order today for just $69.99 and save 30%! That's a great deal until you realize you've just set aside seventy dollars for a product that could come out next month or next year. Of course, you've probably already stopped reading and bought it with one-click shopping. I don't blame you.
