Whenever someone talks about Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson around me...I always wonder why he isn't the biggest action star on the planet.  After all, he's got everything an action star needs like the physique and charisma, but for some reason, after making the awesome movie The Rundown with director Peter Berg, he never followed it up with another kick ass action film.  Instead, he worked in the family friendly genre and made The Game Plan, Race to Witch Mountain, Tooth Fairy and he did a voice in Planet 51.  While that's probably a smart long term career move, for people that want to see Dwayne Johnson kicking ass, we've been waiting years to see him punch someone else in the face.

Thankfully, the wait is over, as Johnson is currently filming CBS Films Faster, and it features him trying to get revenge on the four people that killed his brother.  Hit the jump for more:

Just a few days ago I was invited - along with a few other online journalists - to the set of Faster in Studio City, California.  While I can only write what's called a "preview piece", I can report they showed us some footage from the movie and we got to watch Johnson film an action scene that featured him firing one of the largest hand guns I've ever seen.

But let me back up a second.

Since many of you might not know about the movie...along with Dwayne Johnson, Faster stars Billy Bob Thornton and newcomer Oliver Jackson-Cohen alongside Carla Gugino, Maggie Grace, and Moon Bloodgood.  George Tillman Jr. (Notorious, Men of Honor, Soul Food) is directing from a screenplay written by Joe and Tony Gayton.

While on set we got to interview Dwayne Johnson, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, and director George Tillman Jr.  But all the interviews are embargoed till later this year.

As I said before, the movie is about Johnson seeking revenge on the four people that killed his brother.  The beginning of the film sees Johnson leaving prison after a long sentence (why will be revealed later) and he goes on a killing spree almost immediately.  As soon as that starts to happen, a Cop (Billy Bob Thorton) is on his tail and a killer (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) is also taking an interest in him.

What's cool is everyone on set talked about the film being a throwback to the 70's in terms of tone and action and none of the characters have names beyond Cop, Killer and Driver (Dwayne Johnson). Again, with this being a preview piece, I can't say much more than that.

Just know if you're a fan of Dwayne Johnson action star, later this year you'll be able to see him kick some ass again.
