With the actor first gaining fame as a professional wrestler who only used to be known as The Rock, what better man than Dwayne Johnson to bring a drama series set in the world of wresting to television. Deadline reports NBC has just picked up a pilot from Johnson and producer Jerry Bruckheimer that will take place during the golden age of wrestling in the 1980′s. With World Championship Wrestling and the World Wrestling Federation being at the top of their game in that decade, it’s the perfect setting for such a series which will be written by Brent Fletcher and Seamus Kevin Fahey (Spartacus: Gods of the Arena)

It’s yet another period drama heading to networks following the success of Mad Men, and the premiere of new dramas like Pan-Am and The Playboy Club this fall. The question is whether or not real wrestling icons like Hulk Hogan or Randy “Macho Man” Savage will be included, or if the drama will be completely fictionalized. Since wrestling has never been my cup of tea, I’m not necessarily excited, but I could’ve said the same thing about my interest in a New York ad agency in the 60′s and now I can’t miss an episode of Mad Men, so there you go.

It will be cool to have wrestlers from that era make cameos.

The late 90s to early 00′s was the biggest wrestling has ever been as far a cultural phenom. I’m not sure why they’d choose to make this an 80′s because I think 80′s nostalgia has come and gone.

I just paíd $20.87 for an íPad 2.64GB and my boyfriend loves his Panasoníc Lumíx GF 1 Cámera that we got for $38.79 there arriving tomorrow by UP S.I will never pay such expensive retail príces in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LCD T V to my boss for $657 which only cost me $62.81 to buy.

I wonder if they’ll approach this similar to the Wire. Each season could either explore a particular territory (World Class, AWA, etc.) or a particular “theme” across territories. Journeymen like Andre the Giant could serve as the connective tissue between seasons and territories.

Whatever the case, I suspect a lot of former fans are more interested in the behind-the-scenes stories than in watching today’s in-ring action. The WWE DVDs look to have been selling well— which “may” support that idea. If so, this puts the Rock ahead of the curve, in terms of giving the fans what they really want.

ummm WCW was not around in the 80s.

WCW was not around in the 80′s, but it’s immediate predecessor, the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA), was. It became WCW after it was bought by Ted Turner. Yes, I am a wrestling geek, and I’m so looking forward to this show. The wild lifestyles of wrestlers behind the scenes is a lot more interesting than the on-screen product. The combined cocaine/painkiller/steroids monster really took hold in the 80s, directly leading to the premature deaths of so many stars in the late 90s and 2000s. The writers will be able to mine a number of good wrestler autobiographies to create realistic story lines. Ironically, a scathing expose of one of the 80s biggest stars, Ric Flair, was just published today (http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/6891795/the-wrestler-real-life). I also love the fact that the writers of Spartacus are involved; they’ll be perfect for this project.
