E3 2009 – Pictures of the Heavy Loader from James Cameron’s AVATAR

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted:June 2nd, 2009 at 4:10 pm

Avatar.jpgToday is the first day of E3 here in Los Angeles and I just got back from the convention center. In a little while I’ll be posting another article filled with a lot of images from the convention floor, but the photos you’re about to see are worth their own post.

About a week ago, the website Marketsaw posted some spy pictures of what they called ‘heavy equipment’ from James Cameron’s “Avatar”. Unfortunately, they only had one image and you couldn’t see the entire suit.

But at the Ubisoft booth they had the ‘heavy lifter’ on display and I was able to snap a number of photos. While I have no idea what it does in the movie, I’m sure it must be important if they brought it to the convention.

Unfortunately, I never made an appointment to play the game as I figured it would be on display. Bad move on my part. So here’s one image with a lot more after the jump:

It seems to me that a mech wouldn't need a shoulder strap for a gun…

It seems to me that a Hum-Vee wouldn't need to be up-armored but such is the dynamic world we live in. It could be that It's an "after" thought/solution to a machine originally intended for something other than alien conquest.

It's based on Anime', who cares if it needs it or not, only if it looks cool…

It's not based on an anime. This is an original idea created by James Cameron.

Its not based on the anime. This is whole lot different. Don't you ever wonder why M. Night Shyamalan's only got the title "The Last Airbender" without the Avatar?

it would need a shoulder strap if it wanted to let go of it and use the hand for something else without putting the gun down…

it's not a strap. if you look at the other photos from the back it's actually the bullets wrap over the top of the shoulder and in to the gun.

    The Matrix 3… anyone?

I totally agree, unfornately this seems to be a clear rip-off of the robot suits from matrix revolutions, with the main difference being that these power suits have a glass shield whereas in the matrix they were open. Too bad, but im still pumped for this movie regardless

Clear rip off of the MATRIX? um…have you watched ANY Anime? Where do you think the Matrix got the idea from?

He's right though it was a cool scene The Matrix does NOT have a monopoly over mechs.

not entirely rip off, cameron has used similar mech´ in Aliens and I´ve seen similar ones on other games…besides all cars with 4 wheels are similar too so why would that be unfortunuate? I don´t care if there is any similarities. Cameron has never let me down and I´m sure it´ll be a great movie.

"Private Session, Invitation Only." Now to find someone who got in and is willing to talk. I don't want to spoil the movie by learning too much, but this tease is simply not enough. Can't wait for December when Jim plays Santa to movie-goers everywhere.

I'll bet the game will rock–I'm sure the subject and designs are tops and they've had an insane amount of time to develop it.

Can the font "Papyrus" please die a slow, painful death already. I hope this isn't the actual title treatment for the film. It makes it appear to be the sequel to 'Willow'.

um I imagine the strap is just for the floor model that can't have the benefit of special effects. The thing is after all just a piece of cool as hell metal, so they probably needed a last minute solution to suspend the weapon that will more than likely be strapless in the movie. Or maybe they just like to jimmy rig stuff in their time…..

of course it needs a strap. it probably lets go of the gun to grab at shit, or to climb or whatever…needs something to let the gun hang beside the thing.

That's a pretty crappy extrapolation of technology. Looks like it came out of a Caterpillar factory 20 years from now.

Its basically a human exoskeleton. Hence a strap, seperate firearm, backpack would all be appropriate, as they could be dumped if one needed to haul ass, just like in real life. Also just like in real life, one cannot hold ones weapon in one hand for any significant length of time, hence we use shoulder straps to take the weight off our arms and use our arms for other shit. I don't think its dedicated military hardware, but a general exploration suit that has been 'outfitted' with an offensive weapon.

I was US Army Infantry; if it has a hand, it needs a sling. If it's mounted to the arm, it wouldn't have a sling because it wouldn't have a hand; no point. With a sling, you can use your hand.

You don't build to look how a twelve year old thinks it would look, you build it to work.

And p.s. STUPID POINT about a friggin' cool mock up (NOT REAL = MOCK UP / SET PIECE)
