It’s been about two months since news broke that Taron Egerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service) scored the lead role in Dexter Fletcher’s upcoming film and now he’s on set with co-star Hugh Jackman filming it. Apparently Egerton beat out “several hot up-and-coming actors” for the role of the infamous ski jumper Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards by acing a screen-test with Jackman.

After Edwards failed to make the Great Britain downhill skiing team for the 1984 Games, he decided to move to Lake Placid, New York to train harder. Trouble is, Edwards quickly ran out of funds so instead he switched to ski jumping, which had a far less competitive qualifying process because there were no other British ski jumpers. That’s where Jackman’s character steps in. He’s playing Chuck Berghorn, the coach who helped Edwards through a number of challenges before he competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics. Edwards wound up placing last in the 70m and 90m events, but his failure actually turned him into a celebrity. The worse he performed, the more popular he became.

In honor of the first day of filming, Jackman shared an image of himself with Egerton on set shooting a scene that appears to take place during the Winter Olympics in Calgary. It looks like Jackman might just be hanging out for the day, but Egerton is in full costume, down to the glasses Edwards needed to wear because he was so farsighted. You can check out the first behind-the-scenes Eddie the Eagle image below and if you'd like to see what the real Eddie Edwards looked like to compare, click here.
