Though a sequel to 2014’s sci-fi hit Edge of Tomorrow has been in development pretty much since the movie hit theaters, it’s been slow going for director Doug Liman‘s follow-up film. Matthew Robinson, the co-writer/co-direct behind 2009’s The Invention of Lying and the co-writer for the more recent Monster Trucks has apparently turned in a pitch for the sequel that has landed him a screenwriting position on it. He’ll have some big shoes to fill considering that the original film was written by Oscar-winner Christopher McQuarrie alongside brothers Jez and John-Henry Butterworth as an adaptation of Hiroshi Sakurazaka‘s sci-fi light novel “All You Need Is Kill.”
Deadline reports that Robinson’s pitch got him a spot on the sequel’s screenwriting team, there are no details as to this new take and how it rejuvenated the project. Liman is developing the script with Robinson, and though stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt are not officially attached to return (and likely won’t be until they see a script worth signing on for), they’re reportedly in the loop. Producers on the sequel include Erwin Stoff, Tom Lassally, and Masi Oka, with Hisashi Sasaki executive producing.
The last we heard, Liman was setting up the sequel, tentatively titled Live Die Repeat and Repeat, to be his next directorial effort. The plan was to slim down the follow-up film to focus more on the characters of Cage and Rita, Cruise and Blunt, respectively, along with a third “movie-stealing” character he teased. Whether that plan stays intact or not remains to be seen, but the plan was always to complete the story with this sequel, so whenever it shows up, expect it to be the final chapter.
