Earlier today, Warner Bros. was promoting Godzilla via a viral marketing campaign.  It looks like they’re also using the same strategy for their action movie, Edge of Tomorrow.  The film stars Tom Cruise as a military officer who is killed within minutes of a doomed combat mission to take down a hive-like alien race; he then wakes up and is forced to relive the day over and over again, but it allows him to become a better soldier and perhaps change his fate.  The images are coming from the Twitter feed @EmbeddedUDF, and they’re somewhat low-quality, probably to stick with viral campaign’s alternate reality.  Maybe we’ll get some higher quality images when the first trailer is released on Wednesday.

Hit the jump to check out the images.  The film also stars Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton and Jeremy PivenEdge of Tomorrow opens June 6, 2014.

Here’s the official synopsis for Edge of Tomorrow:

The epic action of “Edge of Tomorrow” unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world.

Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again.

But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.

So is this like Source Code with aliens?

    • Scopedog

Nope. The book it was based on was published years before TSC. The only elements they share are a soldier and a time loop. That’s about it.

I think the first novel dealing with time travel and loops is “grandfather paradox” novel, by René Barjavel in 1943/1944.

Hmmm…thanks for this. Might have to look it up.

The source novel for EOT was published in English a couple of years back. Give it a read; it’s a damned fine book.

thanks for the heads-up. will look for it. I am a huge sci-fi fan.

      Battle Source Angeles.

I liked it better when this movie was called ALL YOU NEED IS KILL.

  • Batzombie

I hope the trailer’s good, because “Edge of Tomorrow” may be the dumbest title I’ve ever heard.

    • Strong Enough

its actually makes sense when you think about it.

      • Doctor Reality

        Hahaha, that’s the worst part!

Also it sounds like a 90s/2000s thriller starring Denzel Washington.

      • Strong Enough

No it sounds like an 80s sci fi movie staring Vin Diesel

    • Doctor Reality

It used to be called ALL YOU NEED IS KILL.

      How horribly epic is that?!

  • SomeGuy

I hope Bill Paxton channels his character from Weird Science in this one.

  • NICK НΛRT

    cool i guess

  • drinkingsquid

The last picture looks like the joker (the dark knight) wearing an armor and wielding a sword….weird huh?…….its simple we kill robocop….

  • The Flobbit

Is it surprising that I am really looking forward to this movie? Cruise has true talent – see Oblivion, Magnolia, and really grips the screen. Blunt, Piven, and Paxton are always awesome, the premise seems promising, and the movie wellmade.

    Count me in.

    • lordjim

yes.besides the generic and rather stupid last act, i really loved oblivion, next to moon the best science fiction film in years.

      • The Flobbit

Well, everything pales in comparison to Gravity, but thats not really sci fi. So yeah, Cloud Atlas, Oblivion, Moon, Minority Report, Children of Men, District 9… These are my tops. Am I missing any?

      • lordjim

children of men, hell yes, forgot about that one, a cinematic masterpiece! eden log was interesting, a world of it´s own, a bit pretentious and slow and certainly not for everybody, but i am glad i had the experience and intend to give it a second watch, and looper was quite enjoyable, didn´t like the farmhouse setting though.

      • The Flobbit

Oh yeah, I’m missing Looper. Excellent film that. But Children of Men – that’s a bonafide masterpiece, and District 9 is a class all it’s own.
