Fresh off this morning’s behind-the-scenes featurette, Warner Bros. has released a fantastic new Edge of Tomorrow trailer for director Doug Liman’s upcoming sci-fi actioner.  Tom Cruise plays a military officer who keeps being killed during a doomed combat mission to take down a hive-like alien race, only to wake up and relive the same day over and over again.  In order to perhaps change his fate and save humanity, he works with a Special Forces warrior (Emily Blunt) to train himself to become a better soldier.  The premise itself is fascinating enough, but this trailer shows more of the relationship between Cruise’s cowardly character and Blunt’s warrior as the two are in training, and it looks incredibly promising.  I also really like the aesthetic that Liman has settled on for the film, and the set pieces look absolutely thrilling.

Here’s the official synopsis for Edge of Tomorrow:

The epic action of “Edge of Tomorrow” unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world.

Major William Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission.  Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again.

But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt).  And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.

    Why…How…does this look good?

I’m way more interested in this knowing it’s Groundhog day meets Sci-fi bug hunt.

I think a better and more relevant creative analogy would be video games. Tom Cruise is like a gamer who has to learn how to play well in order to beat the enemy, respawning repeatedly until he does so.

It’s got Tom Cruise, so I know I’ll be seeing it at some point. Reviews will determine if that’s gonna be theaters or Blu-ray.

Source Code + Starship Troopers = Edge of Tomorrow

      • Ozweego

so was Starship Troopers if you respect what it was and not what most people thought it was suppose to be.

+ Halo (and any other shooter game where the gamer plays, dies, learns new skills, re-plays, repeat, in order to win).

I’m in, it looks like fun to me. Even though Tom Cruise is like the same character in every single movie, I still enjoy him. I guess its a familiarity thing.

Ahem … excuse me some gentlemen named Les Grossman, Stacee Jaxx, Lestat, Nathan Algren, TJ Mackey and Ron Kovic would like a word with you.

whoa you can tell who people are by the little pic by their name?

I like Tom Cruise. He’s easy to watch and always riveting. He’s actually a very powerful actor, with an ability to hold the screen like few others. Consider his performances in Minority Report, Magnolia, and Oblivion.

      • Faptain America

I agree completely. People want to hate Cruise because he’s been around and been good for so long it’s become a bit cliched. But for me he’s still the biggest pure movie star in the world.

      • The Flobbit

I think Tom Cruise is the last of a dying breed: the Movie Star. Now we have actors and celebrities, but Tom Cruise is the last person on earth to retains that leading-man glamour and style, combined with the pedigree of projects he’s chosen. Kind of reminds me of Sean Connery or young George Clooney.

Tom Cruise: world’s last movie star.

Lokks pretty friggin sweet. I’m in.

    oh. boy. (All in lowercase.)

I have a feeling that, after viewing the average audience member will say “For me… it’s been an eternity.”

Seriously, it’s like they took every single “cool” thing from science fiction movies in the last 30 years and lumped them together. Prometheus’ single deep horn note – check! Bill Paxton as “an army guy” – check! Helicopter-looking thingamajigs from Oblivion, Avatar, Aliens – check! Exoskeleton – check! Generic babe stretching out on the floor a la’ Angelina Jolie – check! Gritty, grayish-blue tinge – check! Humongous explosions – check! Oh yeah, and Tom Cruise, who has fallen prey to the Johnny Depp syndrome, in another generic shoot ‘em up sci-fi movie – check!

Wake me when P.T. Anderson and Joaquin Phoenix team up again.

I don’t understand what the stakes are. If he has unlimited repeats to save the world like in a video game, then where is the tenision in the movie? Does he have a limit of lives? Does the girl have a limit? Do the aliens get smarter every time? Why should I be emotionally invested in these characters?

    • SWOLE

Only Cruise repeats the events, not Blunt. As for the rest you’ll have to watch the movie to find out!

I did not give a crap about this after the previous trailers.
Now I’m counting the minutes – and there are way too many until release.
