With comic book movie casting news coming at us from every angle recently, today we finally hear from an old-friend you may have heard of: The Avengers. A HitFix report is claiming that, perhaps in spite of his best hopes, Edward Norton will not be reprising his role as “The Hulk” in Marvel Studios’ future blockbuster. It seems as if Marvel and Norton did not initially see eye-to-eye in terms of what the actor would make for his contributions. As such, the comic juggernauts now seem to be looking to cast the wardrobe-ripping member of the Avengers with someone more affordable (Note: “more affordable” is a euphemism for an “unknown”).

For more on the casting situation as well as a brief overview of what we do know about the film, hit the jump.

Update: Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige has sent HitFix a statement confirming Edward Norton will not be returning as Bruce Banner.  Hit the jump for more:

the_avengersFor those of you convinced of the possibility that Norton has bigger and better things to attend to than smashing random large objects, Hitflix claims that the actor confirmed his interest in the role to them at this year’s South by Southwest Festival in Texas. Moreover, the report is also steadfast in its claim that Norton recently met with the all-but-official director of The Avengers, Joss Whedon, and that both reported their enthusiasm for the project back to Marvel shortly thereafter. In short, all reports currently point to a scenario in which Norton wants to be a part of Marvel’s sure fire hit but is being left out in exchange for a more budget-friendly option.

While the Hulk/Norton scenario will surely continue to play out in the coming months, there are a few actors who will almost certainly be avenging like its going out of style come the summer of 2012. Robert Downey Jr. is Tony Stark/Iron Man, while Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as the Asgardian Thunder God Thor, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury all seem to be virtual locks as well.

As always, we’ll have more info as it breaks. In the meantime, The Avengers is still slated for a May 4th, 2012 release.

UPDATE: Marvel sent Hitfix this statement. Sounds like it wasn’t about money…

“We have made the decision to not bring Ed Norton back to portray the title role of Bruce Banner in the Avengers. Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members. The Avengers demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble, as evidenced by Robert, Chris H, Chris E, Sam, Scarlett, and all of our talented casts. We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements, and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks.”

this is a bullshit story. first, it makes it sound as if Norton actually would want to be in The Avengers. Everything up until now has indicated that he doesn't want anything to do with Marvel after TIH. Also, is “more affordable” a euphemism for “unknown?” It seems like it would be the other way around. This whole article just seemed worthless. I get the feeling like Joss Whedon won't even end up working on this film.

Ed Norton was the best thing for Hulk. Marvel should stop making him the escape goat for it not doing so well. However Hulk did do well so Marvel just hire him and get on to hulk 2 or is it 3?

    and the Avengers

i wish they would keep edward norton

The Hulk become a movie I had no interest in to one of my favorite films due to Ed Norton's involvement. I was never the biggest Hulk fan and Ang Lee's film had me convinced the character couldn't be translated to film. However, after finding out Norton was cast for the Incredible Hulk I though perhaps the movie wouldn't be awful. Glad I saw it – it's become one of my go-to films in my collection. Ed Norton brought a weight to Banner that grounded the character. The Hulk is a character that in my opinion can easily venture into camp territory but banner made it interesting and grounded (for a super-hero movie).

If they cast someone else as the Hulk my interest in the this film will drop. I won't avoid it entirely – perhaps wait until Netflix sends it or a friend grabs a dvdrip or R5.

I think it's Marvel being cheap and not wanting to use resources and actors who would transform the film from merely good to great. But hey they probably made money Fantastic Fours so what do they care if its good or not as long as there's a nice payday once it's all said and done.

Fuck I really hope this is a rumor.

    Dear Jason Barr,
Why did you use a picture of an Avengers line-up that doesn't include Thor or Captain America and has Aries and Wonder Man (who will NOT be appearing in this movie)?

  8. Bill Reed @

Maybe they can afford Eric Bana.

  9. lintcrest @

I doubt Banner would get much screen time in a movie about Avengers vs Hulk or however the story plays out. Why spend millions of dollars on Norton when it will largely be CGI Hulk on screen.

Edward Norton IS Bruce Banner. This movie will fail and I won't go see it if Marvel don't realize this.

They are probably crying right now. You've hurt their feelings…

    that's a shame.

    ha! that'll be teh awes0me

I may be wrong in this but isn't Bruce Banner when involved with the avengers usually just banner cause they can't control him and he only hulks out only when he has no other choice. Bruce was mainly in the avengers because of his great mind not his uncontrollable hulk. Sooooo you would probably see more of Norton than the CG Hulk.

Any way I think it would be a big lose not to have Norton and if that is what Marvel said about him as an actor then they must be high. Not sure what movies of his they have seen of his but from the ones I have seen he is the complete opposite of what they stated and I'm sure any actor that has worked with him would agree

  16. Clusterwan @

Ok maybe he will be half and half from what it says on IMDB http://www.imdb.com/news/ni2749842/ maybe more Hulk sorry :|

    Topher Grace for Hulk!

  18. Migs_lionhart @

awww… that pretty much sucks:P I love him as Banner. He can be frail but at the same time look and feel fiercely independent:P I just hope the new guy receiving his role would just be just as good.

  19. VALENTINEproductions @

they plan to announce a name actor? So that means it's not going to be an unknown. This sucks either way. The incredible hulk helped hype up the avenger movie and now it won't even matter. So fuckin lame. I don't even want to see it now.

ok recently ie a few months ago norton was interviewed by Mtv and said he is really interested in being the Hulk in the avengers and in other interviews as well. It's easy to find when you google it. My major disappointment is Chris Evans as Captain america I am really tired of seeing actors that play other super heros being cast as a different hero in the same franchise or other like Ryan Reynolds ( Deadpool, Green Lantern, and Flash WTF). I think the perfect actor would be Sam Worthington he has the perfect face and body for the role while Chris Evens is way to thined out in the jaw line for cap and I don't think he could be convincing as CA. Next if the plot is Loki controlling the Hulk and the destroying NY would be a horrible move as well. First they just put out an animated move of the same thing but instead of NY it was Asgard and in Hulk vs Thor and in that it only took Thor to take him down. Second in the last TIH it was Hulk fighting Abomination ripping apart NY. Sooooo WTF??? your going to combine the two movies and give us something we have already seen but with more heroes (avengers)!!! That wouldn't even be worth the ticket price give us something new!!! Why not have Stark and Cap with Thor go to get bruce in canada in the beginning, fight the Hulk, loose then wait till he is banner reason with him to join them as banner cause they need his brilliant mind not the Hulk because their is a bigger threat with the Skrull. Get back Ed and then it would be a movie worth the price. Hell it could even be 2 movies at the end of the first the Avengers are almost completely defeated and ending like TIH where banner decides to Hulk out to save the world eyes turn green and cut. Great story and cliff hanger to lead to the second. Anyway thats just my thoughts on the matter.

  21. izikavazo @

Surely he signed one of those crazy marvel contracts. They must have had him cornered before they decided not to bring him back.

  22. colin @

that would be so fascinating if the did that

  23. Paige @

I've been a big fan. Since Edward Norton is not partaking, I will not go. Neither will my family.

  24. kevin @

I am glad I didn't watch IRON MAN 2 because of this. The only reason the remake ever took off was because of Norton, I guess marvel forgot how bad the first hulk movie was?

I for one am boycotting all marvel themed movies, I don't need to see something great that will eventually just get raped and defamed.

  25. mike wiltsie @

This is the second actor Marvel dropped, I guess marvel just wants the whole pie and not just a slice. They probably figured they would have a bigger cut if they have an unknown actor.

it is crap that ed norton is not playing bruce banner…..

  28. Angel @

This avengers movie will fail if Norton is not the hulk. Im not saying he is the single brick that holds up the house but he is the reason why I gave the incredible hulk movie a second chance after the first hulk movie failed miserably, and I loved the new hulk and edward nortons part in it. As I don’t really agree with some people saying they will not watch it, cuz you will, I agree with takeshi miike when he says he will wait till the software release. If Norton is not the hulk I will not contribute my earned dollars to the ” blockbuster box office opening day records” this movie will aim for, which it will not get either for not having Norton. Oh and marvel will see alot of people turning into hulks if they do not get Norton on as the hulk for the avengers movie.
