Sony Pictures has released a new trailer for District 9 director Neill Blomkamp‘s sci-fi film Elysium.  The story takes place in 2159, and two classes of people are divided: the wealthy live on a man-made space station called Elysium, while the rest of the humans inhabit an overpopulated and ruined Earth.  Matt Damon plays a desperate man who must reach Elysium in order to find a cure that will save his life.  Running at over three minutes long, this trailer does an excellent job of clearly setting up the film’s premise while also teasing a fantastic-looking sci-fi film in the process.  It’s great to see Damon playing a character with a bit of an edge to him, and Blomkamp’s world-building and visual effects are as exciting as ever.

Hit the jump to watch the new trailer.  The film also stars Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Alice Braga, Wagner MouraDiego Luna and William Fichtner.  Elysium opens on August 9th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Elysium:

In the year 2159, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. The people of Earth are desperate to escape the planet’s crime and poverty, and they critically need the state-of-the-art medical care available on Elysium – but some in Elysium will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve their citizens’ luxurious lifestyle. The only man with the chance to bring equality to these worlds is Max (Matt Damon), an ordinary guy in desperate need to get to Elysium. With his life hanging in the balance, he reluctantly takes on a dangerous mission – one that pits him against Elysium’s Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster) and her hard-line forces – but if he succeeds, he could save not only his own life, but millions of people on Earth as well.

    kmccarney88: yes… yes we do

but holy hell, does this movie look good. District 9 was terrific, but now it looks like we get to see what Blomkamp can do with a big budget. This might’ve just jumped to the top of my most-anticipated-movie-of-the-summer list.

    • matthew

This only cost 90million so still not that big of a budget.

  • Ozweego

This is my man of steel!

  • PROM3TH3US

Hell yeah!! Please let Neill Blomkamp direct a MASS EFFECT movie!!

Apple.com/trailers has removed all 1080p trailers, as well as downloads, and Yahoo!Movies is the biggest piece of sh*t in the world, which wont even let you get through a single trailer without stopping 55 times or crashing altogether. So, basically, that means there is nowhere, other than the occasional youtube release to see a newly released trailer in the way that you want to watch it without any problems. Thanks apple and yahoo…..you f*ckers have been great.

    • Erica

Trailer Addict is pretty decent, IMO.

  • kmccarney88

This movie looks absolutely fantastic. I absolutely cannot wait for this to come out.

I wonder how much the studios will be kicking themselves, once this comes out, for not allowing Blomkamp to direct Halo, which would have been incredible and made them a billion dollars?

    • Jim

It was Microsoft and Bungie’s fault, not the studios. They wanted too much creative control.

  • RiddleThemThis

Wasn’t a big fan of district 9, but this looks pretty good. I hope Jodie Foster has a decent sized role in the movie, shes getting very little screen time in these trailers.

Why weren’t you a fan of Disctrict 9? Just curious.

      • RiddleThemThis

I just wasn’t a big fan of the story. I’m not saying it was a bad film, it just wasn’t something that appealed to me. I didn’t dislike the film or have a bad time watching it, but its not something that I would rewatch.

Sounds like you’re trying to avoid people raging on your opinion. :P

      • andi

dude, RiddleThemThis gave a honest reply and you just fucking shat on it. Grow the fuck up and be cool, for fucksake.

      • Mitchell Taco Nash

I can understand where RiddleThemThis is coming from and partially share their opinion.

You, on the other hand, take a simple one sentence comment of mine and overreact to it, which is very ironic because the comment itself was addressing how people can rage and/or overreact to comments/opinions.

My comment was more-so in defence of them than anything because they should be able to simply say they didn’t like District 9 without people getting upset at a different opinion. If anyone needs growing up, it appears to be you.

Im getting tired of all the “I hate rich people movies” that have been coming out recently. Just so preachy an annoying. Ill prob still see this cause the visuals look good and its a good cast but sometimes these movies need to stop trying to deliver such blunt political statements, it ussually ruins them tbh cause the message is so blunt.

    • disqus_OopbUgp6iJ

This is nothing new cinema was built on the people taking on the man, go as far back as silent films Charlie Chaplin was in, gangsters doing illegal activities to get apart of that rich people pie. These are simple story mechanics rich people bad, poor people good its what you say within them that makes them special. These are underdog stories, why are the great sports dynasties hated like the yankees because they win so much, shouldn’t that be applauded by the masses a team that has a higher goal then most and go about achieving it. No one wants to see people dominate every time, as humans we believe the odds must be tipped in their favor, and they usually are.

    • MIXTER

Its because its the rich people keeping the poor man down. always has been like that. From ancient Rome, throughout history. Whilst not all rich people are bad people, the status is humanities mortal enemy. Thats why theyre always the villains.

    • Kpaqu1

I love that the “I hate rich people movies” are made by and star some of the richest people. Do as I say, not as I do.

    • Strong Enough

      you’re probably a republican.

    • Jim

Class warfare has been a theme in literature and film for decades especially scifi. Also, it’s very real and to deny that is you being way to naive.

District 9 was WAY overrated. This “looks” slick, but also so predictable. The evil rich people, the good poor people. The big hand to hand fight at the end. He must do it for the poor sick girl. I mean come on, could they be any more obvious. Maybe I’m just jaded.

    • Guest

You’re not only ‘jaded,’ you’re also wrong. Didn’t you watch the trailer?? Max needs to get to Elysium to save his own life.

    • tim

Science Fiction is best when it’s presenting us with social ills and moral dilemmas within the context of a new world, IMO. And yeah, maybe Blokamp’s metaphors are a little blunt and on the nose but so what? At least we get to see wonderful imagery and worlds fully realized alongside a story with actual substance. Let’s just try to be happy for the few sci fi movies we have these days that try be something more than giant robots smashing things.

    • wassupman

“Maybe i’m just jaded.” Yes. Yes, you are.

“It’s great to see Damon playing a character with a bit of an edge to him” Yeah, OK. Damon has played a professional assassin, a coked-out toyboy, a corrupt cop, a cold fish CIA officer, a sociopathic liar … but THANK GOD Damon is FINALLY playing a character with an edge: a glorified video game protagonist who must defeat the evil richies with his Super Mario Sunshine backpack.

    • koliphonius

lol nicely put. it was time for a serious gamechanger.

just more of the same fare begging to be more than trite special effects nonsense. just want a good movie with compelling characters. please. this director has fallen like many a good independent directors, choosing instead to massage his ego instead of considering his legacy as a filmmaker. It’s too bad. He’s adding to the problem. It’s only a matter of time before we get the Elysium pack sponsored by McDonald’s or whatever. Nice job.
