What do you get when you mix Game of Thrones and The Wizard of Oz? Emerald City, a new NBC series loosely inspired by the storybook classic. As shown in the first trailer, the famous Yellow Brick Road is still glistening, but the rest of Oz is dark and full of terrors.

The basic premise is still the same, but with a lot of differences: a 20-something girl named Dorothy (Adria Arjona) and her dog are caught in a twister that ravages her home in Kansas. They awake in the wonderful land of Oz, where they encounter all manner of creature. Instead of Terrier, Toto is a German Shepherd. Instead of the Lolly Pop Guild, these “munchkins” have more in common with the Wildlings. Instead of a house, Dorothy drops a police car on the Wicked Witch of the East. Instead of a brainless Scarecrow, she encounters a hunky soldier whose been left crucified in a field with no memory of who he is. (Yes, it’s that serious.)

The list goes on, but for as wacky and wild as this sounds, the trailer actually looks pretty cool. Watch it below.

Daredevil’s very own Kingpin, Vincent D’Onofrio, portrays the Wizard. In this story, he’s a ruler who banished magic from Oz and rules over many kingdoms with his army fueled by steampunk gadgetry. There are vistas reminiscent of the special effects imagery for Braavos in Game of Thrones, while this Oz’s Cowardly Lion is more like a gladiatorial warrior channeling The Mountain’s brute strength. We also have a Guatemalan/Puerto Rican Dorothy, which is something we should praise at the tail end of 2016.

Emerald City premieres on NBC January 6th at 9 p.m. While it’s too soon to promise this’ll be your new replacement for Game of Thrones, perhaps we can settle for a new guilty pleasure from the fantasy genre.
