Emily Blunt has turned down the role of playing the lead female role in Joe Johnston’s The First Avenger: Captain AmericaHero Complex reports that Marvel favored the award-winning actress (as they had previously when they wanted to cast her as Black Widow in Iron Man 2; the role went to Scarlett Johansson when Fox exercised a clause in Blunt’s contract for Gulliver’s Travels that kept her on their movie) to play Captain America’s (Chris Evans) girlfriend during World War II, Peggy Carter (in the present day, her niece Sharon Carter is an Agent of SHIELD).

According to Hero Complex, Blunt has other offers and that’s no surprise since she’s a talented actress and would add some prestige to any picture.  There’s also the problem that the female lead in superhero movies is often a thankless role.  Additionally, it’s possible that Marvel wanted to tie her to future films as they’ve done with other actors starring in their movies.

Marvel is keeping the search alive with other British actresses such as Keira Knightley and Alice Eve under consideration, it appears the studio is looking to the other side of the pond to find their Ms. Carter.

Maybe she declined the role since she would feel guilty that she would be in the movie while her boyfriend John Krasinski didn't land the Captain America lead he campaigned so hard for.

This is terrible news. Emily Blunt has missed out on Marvel twice now, which is a real shame because she's an immensely talented actress. I do like both Keira Knightley and Alice Eve, but Blunt would have been best. I still think she should have been Black Widow. Hopefully, they find someone good that can work well opposite Chris Evans.

Maybe shes saving herself for a bigger role gamble. ie… CATWOMAN. ???

I thought the same thing as juju, her boyfriend John didn't get Captain America so maybe this was a “you should have given him the part” thing.

Considering the time period and how women were built a lil thicker than , I can advocate Knightley being cast. I like her, but no thank you. I'm Sure John ston and company will find a very able actress to fill the role.

I say good for her. She's a very talented actress in high demand for films that would actually require for her to act. And come on, being “The Girlfriend” in these Marvel films are some of the most thankless leading “roles” in big budget films today right up there with “The Wife”. The female lead becomes Eye Candy or That Prize for the superhero to win. And then of course having her signed on for like 6 other movies to play a rather tiny insignificant part (she might have a role in Captain America but come The Avengers and whatever else Marvel has planned she'd be almost nonexistant) could get in the way of her being in other promising projects.
Most likely being asked to play “The Girlfriend” so close after playing a bland “Girlfriend” like role in THE WOLFMAN 2010 (also a Joe Johnston film) just wasn't worth the time and effort, regardless of how much cash thrown her way.

….I still find it odd that with every superhero under the sun getting a movie (Thor? really?) they've still yet to make a Wonder Woman movie and women roles in these superhero films are still stuck to being “The Girlfriend” or “The Prize”

I'll step down from my soapbox now.

She is loads better for the role no doubt. Marvel should find a more suitable role for her instead of a pipsqueak of a role that is Peggy Carter.

Loads of rubbish that one. Its not like its going to be a stretch for her to do that role but nonetheless would have been a wasted effort for one such talent as Emily Blunt.

Marvel should find a bigger and meatier role than this. Emily Blunt deserves better.

Rather glad she didn't take it. Cheers!
