The first pictures of Emma Stone and Shailene Woodley filming a scene together for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 have surfaced online. Stone portrayed Gwen Stacy, Peter Parker’s main love interest in the first The Amazing Spider-Man, and Woodley was recently added to play Parker’s iconic longtime love, Mary Jane Watson. While it has been said that Woodley’s role will not be as prominent in this film, if the film follows accurately with Spider-Man mythology, Woodley could become Parker’s romantic frontrunner in the planned third film. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 also stars Andrew Garfield, Sally Field, Jamie Foxx, Chris Cooper, Dane DeHaan, Felicity Jones, and Paul Giamatti, with Marc Webb returning as director.

Hit the jump for some speculation about the possible Gwen-MJ dynamic as well as photos of Stone and Woodley on set.

The images imply that this is the first time the characters are meeting. In the previous Sam Raimi series, Kirsten Dunst’s Mary Jane and Bryce Dallas Howard’s Gwen did not interact much or run in the same circles, so Webb may be developing their relationship more this time around. If the films follow the original Spider-Man love story with Gwen Stacy, her demise could be included in this film to give way for Woodley to take over in the last installment of the intended trilogy. Crafting a relationship or friendship between the two girls could make the story even more heartbreaking.

Both actresses are in high demand right now. Stone just landed a part as Michael Keaton’s recently out of rehab daughter in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s comedy Birdman. Woodley is set to lead the next young adult franchise Divergent, and is in talks to star in the highly anticipated adaptation of John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars. Stepping out of the Spider-Man series could free up Stone to pursue other avenues in her career, but it looks like Woodley is trying to lock it down as a franchise main stay.

Filming for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is currently underway in New York.  The film opens in 3D on May 2, 2014.
