First Look at Hailee Steinfeld in ENDER’S GAME

     February 20, 2013

A new image has been released from Gavin Hood‘s adaptation of Orson Scott Card‘s Ender’s Game.  The film tells the story of Andrew “Ender” Wiggin (Asa Butterfield), a young boy sent away to Battle School to hone his military skills and, hopefully, save the world from an impending alien invasion.  The new image provides the first look at Hailee Steinfeld, who plays Petra Arkanian, the only girl in the Salamander Army, who befriends Ender.  Also, in the background you can see Khylin Rhambo as Dink Meeker (right, next to Ender), and Moises Arias as Bonzo Madrid (end of the table on the left).

Hit the jump to check out the full image.  The film also stars Ben Kingsley, Viola Davis, Abigail Breslin, and Harrison FordEnder’s Game opens November 1st. [Update: We've updated the article with the high-resolution version of the image.]

Here’s the official synopsis for Ender’s Game:

In the near future, a hostile alien race (called the Formics) have attacked Earth. If not for the legendary heroics of International Fleet Commander, Mazer Rackham (Ben Kingsley), all would have been lost. In preparation for the next attack, the highly esteemed Colonel Graff (Harrison Ford) and the International Military are training only the best young children to find the future Mazer. Ender Wiggin (Asa Butterfield), a shy, but strategically brilliant boy is pulled out of his school to join the elite.

Arriving at Battle School, Ender quickly and easily masters increasingly difficult war games, distinguishing himself and winning respect amongst his peers. Ender is soon ordained by Graff as the military’s next great hope, resulting in his promotion to Command School. Once there, he’s trained by Mazer Rackham, himself, to lead his fellow soldiers into an epic battle that will determine the future of Earth and save the human race.

I don’t really have any faith in this director but this cast is dyanamite. Butterfield, Steinfeld, Kingsley, Davis, Breslin, and Ford. Pretty good cast honestly, hopefully they can carry it high.

  • Drake

Petra didn’t have a very big part in the book, but I’m sure they’ll expand it for the movie. Why cast Steinfeld if you weren’t going to give her a bigger part.

I’ve been really scared for this project since day one. I can’t get over that this is the guy who brought us Wolverine and now he’s jumping on one of the most beloved sci-fi books out there.

I would love for this to be awesome as I’ve read 9 of the however many Ender-Universe books out there (Card keeps adding little short stories and long stories and everything in between). I’d hate to see a story that’s been in waiting for so many years get mangled and tossed aside after one bad film.

Wonder if they’re including all the parallel stuff with his brother and sister on Earth fomenting revolution over the “internet”. Even though it takes place over the course of a few years while Ender is at the battle school, it’s still a pretty important chunk of the story if I recall.

As much as I like Ender’s Game, bring on Ender’s Shadow. Would love to see the Bean books brought to the screen (at least Ender’s Shadow and Shadow of the Hegemon).

The actor’s in this film are going to be very embarrassed when the sh*t hits the fan that Orson Scott Card is a rabid homophobe. Can. not. wait.
