Watch the Weird and Wonderful ENTERTAINMENT Trailer Starring Gregg Turkington

If you’re looking for a change from superhero movies and low-brow comedies then perhaps writer-director Rick Alverson’s R-rated drama Entertainment is for you. The film follows a small-time comedian at the ragged end of his career as he tours through the California desert. His hopes for a reunion with his estranged daughter and a shot at a Hollywood contract just barely keep him going despite the seemingly endless cycle of sub-par performances in rundown venues. You can get a sample of Entertainment in the newly released trailer.

At first blush, this is a pretty jarring look at the film, but once you settle into it you begin to enjoy its weirdness. I honestly thought it was a new effort from Quentin Dupieux when it first started, but Alverson’s drama centers on a very real yet absurd human … rather than a telekinetic tire. Starring Gregg TurkingtonTye Sheridan, John C. Reilly, Michael Cera, and Amy SeimetzEntertainment opens in a limited theatrical release on November 13th; it will be available on iTunes the same day.

Here’s the official synopsis for Entertainment, followed by the first poster:

A broken, aging comedian tours the California desert, lost in a cycle of third-rate venues, novelty tourist attractions, and vain attempts to reach his estranged daughter. By day, he slogs through the barren landscape, inadvertently alienating every acquaintance. At night, he seeks solace in the animation of his onstage persona. Fueled by the promise of a lucrative Hollywood engagement, he trudges through a series of increasingly surreal and volatile encounters. In Alverson’s hallucinatory fugue, Gregg Turkington stars as The Comedian, caught in a struggle between being the center of attention and the object of alienation, occasionally challenged by an unexpected cast of characters played by Tye Sheridan, John C. Reilly, Michael Cera, and Amy Seimetz.
