Kirk Honeycutt over at The Hollywood Reporter may call "Watchmen" the first great flop of 2009 but that "flop" may have the best March opening in Box Office history, outpacing the $70 million made in the opening weekend by Zack Snyder's previous film "300".
Fandango is reporting that 61% of all of its ticket sales are currently for "Watchmen". That is far more than "300" was selling at the same point in its sales cycle. Midnight showings around the country are sold out so if you're wondering why no one is around Thursday night, that's why. Also, you're a loser with no friends who smells bad. Take a shower, be more social, and go see "Watchmen".
Finally, here are the results of a very scientific online poll of 1,000 moviegoers planning to see "Watchmen":
60% have read the Watchmen graphic novel;
85% say the online Watchmen clips and trailers made them more excited to see the movie;
57% plan to see Watchmen with a group of friends;
71% are planning a get together before or after the movie;
85% had seen director Zack Snyder's previous movie, 300, on the big screen;
73% are male; 65% are 18-34.
Now usually I don't make box office predictions because I'm really, really terrible at it. However, with this new data, I am willing/hoping that "Watchmen" makes around $80 million this weekend. Beyond that opening weekend…well, then we'll see if it's a "flop".
