‘Hot Fuzz’ Opens Huge in the U.K.
2/20/2007

If you think Hot Fuzz is getting a lot of coverage on Collider, you’d be right. Even though Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright are pretentious assholes who love the sound of their own voices, I still love the movies they make. And I’ll reluctantly admit to also having enjoyed Spaced - the brilliant TV show they did for the BBC a few years back.

Since someone out there will think I’m being serious with my negative remarks I need to be clear.

Edgar and Simon are two of the most genuine and sincere people I have ever met while working in the entertainment industry. I have seen them interact with both fans as well as industry folks and they treat them all the same. If anyone deserves the success they’re getting it’s them.

So I’m happy to report (via a press release from Rogue Pictures) that Hot Fuzz opened big in the U.K. It had the fifth-biggest opening for a comedy with £5.9 million (equivalent to nearly $11.7 million) in 427 theaters. While that’s not a lot of money when you think about what Ghost Rider made last weekend, for a British comedy it’s huge and it also assures all of us uberfans that they will get more money to make future films.

For more info you can read the press release below. And if you are in the U.K. and haven’t gone to see it yet, stop reading and go to Leicester Square! Finally, for all of us in America, Hot Fuzz opens on 4/20 so get ready!

Edgar, Simon and Nick will be here for a few weeks before it opens to do some serious promoting. You can expect some great stuff here on Collider sometime in April. Yes I’m a prostitute for the Fuzz, what can I say…Simon knows how to give good head.

HOT FUZZ, NEW ACTION COMEDY FROM

SHAUN OF THE DEAD TEAM, HAS BIG #1 OPENING IN U.K.;

U.S. RELEASE SET FOR APRIL 20th, FOLLOWING FILMMAKERS’ VISITS

 Hot Fuzz, the new action comedy from the Shaun of the Dead team, opened in the U.K. and Ireland this past weekend at #1, scoring the biggest opening of the year so far. Hot Fuzz is in release in the U.K. and Ireland through the newly formed Universal Pictures International U.K. and Eire, and will be released in the U.S. on April 20th through Rogue Pictures.

Notching the fifth-biggest opening weekend ever for a comedy in the U.K., Hot Fuzz took in over £5.9 million (equivalent to nearly $11.7 million) in 427 theaters. That figure encompasses two days of paid previews (beginning on Valentine’s Day), which accounted for £$1.6 million (equivalent to $3.1 million).

The numbers also marked Universal’s fifth-biggest opening weekend ever in the U.K., as well as Hot Fuzz production company Working Title Films’ third-biggest opening weekend ever (behind only Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason [in 2004] and Love Actually [in 2003]).

This spring, Hot Fuzz director/co-screenwriter Edgar Wright, co-screenwriter/star Simon Pegg, and star Nick Frost will visit several U.S. cities to promote Hot Fuzz, as they had done prior for Rogue’s successful 2004 release of their sleeper hit Shaun of the Dead. Pre-release events in the U.S. will include a special “Film Comment Selects”/Film Society of Lincoln Center event with the trio on April 10th at the Walter Reade Theater in New York City.

Hot Fuzz’s stellar supporting cast includes Academy Award winner Jim Broadbent, Paddy Considine (In America), Timothy Dalton (The Living Daylights), Martin Freeman (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy), Paul Freeman (Raiders of the Lost Ark), Bill Nighy (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest), Lucy Punch (The Class), Anne Reid (The Mother), Billie Whitelaw (The Omen), Stuart Wilson (The Mask of Zorro), Edward Woodward (The Equalizer), and plenty of surprises!

A Rogue Pictures presentation in association with StudioCanal of a Working Title production in association with Big Talk Productions, Hot Fuzz is produced by Nira Park, Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner.
