HBO Is Developing A Series About Anthony Kiedis

Even if you are not a fan of the Red Hot Chili Peppers (like those of you who still haven't been able to master "Suck My Kiss" on Guitar Hero, for example) have to admit that the individual members of the band are pretty damn interesting.  For God's sake their bassist's name is Flea!  Even without all the rock star stuff that name alone makes him interesting in my book.  Of course the story of singer Anthony Kiedis trumps a funny name any day- or at least that's what HBO is hoping.

According to Variety the network is prepping an hour-long series on Kiedis – specifically, his upbringing in 1970's LA which included mingling with rock royalty and hanging with his drug-dealing dad Spider.  Described as a "drama with comedic elements," the series is tentatively titled "Scar Tissue" and may feature narration and cameo appearances by Kiedis himself.

Kiedis was encouraged to develop the series by Catapult 360 partners Marc Abrams and Michael Benson ("Entourage").  The producers were interested in the singer's recently published biography, especially the section on his unconventional childhood.  "Scar Tissue" will focus on Kiedis' relationship with his father, beginning with their move from Michigan to Hollywood and continuing through Spider's many attempts to break into show business (Kiedis actually began his career as a child actor under the name "Cole Dammett" in the late 1970s).

"To be able to look at a very famous figure and get an origin story, to see the pieces of the puzzle that put him on the path to fame -- it became very clear that this was a special project," Marc Abrams told Variety.  I would normally disagree here (I've about had my fill with rock 'n roll bios) but this series sounds less like rock star preening and more like "The Wonder Years" on speed… and that's a good thing!

Also, "Scar Tissue" is being developed for HBO, the one network that strives to keep its airways relatively crap-free-- "Tell Me You Love Me" not withstanding.  No word on why Showtime was not considered a suitable home for "Scar Tissue," although the whole "you stole the name 'Californication'" lawsuit-thing could explain it.
