John Krasinski, Dominic Cooper, and Julianne Nicholson talk BRIEF INTERVIEWS WITH HIDEOUS MEN

Yes this interview with Dominic Cooper, Julianne Nicholson and writer/director John Krasinski is late. While I would have loved to have posted all my Sundance interviews the week I was there, I conducted over 7 hours of interviews while at this year’s Festival and it’s been a lot harder to get them all online than I expected. But the final tape has been loaded into the computer and within the next two days I really will be done. So now that you know the reason for the delay, let’s get to why you’re here.

Posted below is my video interview with John Krasinski, Dominic Cooper, and Julianne Nicholson for “Brief Interviews with Hideous Men”.

While most of you only know John Krasinski from his work as Jim on NBC’s hit show “The Office”, he’s now also going to be known as a writer/director, as his debut film “Brief Interviews With Hideous Men” premiered at this year’s Sundance. The movie is based on the book by David Foster Wallace and it’s the exploration of men and their relationships with women. Here’s the synopsis:

Sara Quinn (Julianne Nicholson) is interviewing men as part of her graduate studies. Her intellectual endeavor has emotional consequences as the men’s twisted and revealing stories are juxtaposed against the backdrop of her own experience.  As she begins to listen closely to the men around her, Sara must ultimately reconcile herself to the darkness that lies below the surface of human interactions.

While some first time filmmakers are lucky to get one star in their movie…John lined up a hell of a cast with Timothy Hutton, Christopher Meloni, Will Arnett, Dominic Cooper, Rashida Jones, Max Minghella, and Lou Taylor Pucci all doing at least small parts.

Anyway, if you’d like to read Cady’s review of the movie click here, and if you’d like to watch some movie clips try this link. Otherwise you can watch the interview below.

Finally, sometimes you watch an interview to learn a lot about a movie. This is not one of them. The reason to watch this interview is to see how much fun the three of them were having with one another. I can only imagine what the set was like…

John Krasinski, Dominic Cooper, and Julianne Nicholson

  • I started the interview by telling them not to push down on the on/off switch on the microphone
  • What did it mean to get into Sundance and when did they find out they got in
  • I ask John what was it like casting the film and I ask Dominic and Julianne what was it like working for John
  • Since the movie is only seventy something minutes, I ask John if he ever felt pressure to extend the film to 90 minutes which is the typical length of a feature
