Martin Lawrence Exclusive Video Interview – COLLEGE ROAD TRIP
3/3/2008

When I heard that I’d be interviewing Martin Lawrence on camera for “College Road Trip,” the first thing I knew I was going to ask about was “Hot Fuzz.” After all, he’s half of the “Bad Boys 2” team and I really wanted to know what he thought about the Edgar Wright/Simon Pegg movie.

Since not many of you aren't familiar with TV interviews and how they work, here’s what you need to know. When you walk in you usually have a moment or two before the cameras roll. During this time they sometimes put a microphone on you, or sometimes they are fixing the room. Either way, you usually have a few moments to get yourself situated. What I’ve found that's helpful is when I’m going to ask about something that’s not expected, I’ll usually mention before the interview starts that I’ll be talking about it, that way the person I’m interviewing has a quick answer on the subject.

So when I sat down and they were setting up for my interview with Martin, I asked if he’d seen “Hot Fuzz” and would he mind talking about it. I also mentioned that I sort of knew Edgar and Simon and that if we spoke about it I’d send them a link to the interview as I figured they’d get a kick out of it. He said it’d be cool, and then the interview started. So when you get to the “Hot Fuzz” question and he looks at the camera….that’s the reason. He's talking to Simon and Edgar...

But before getting to the interview, here’s what you need to know about “College Road Trip.”

The film stars Martin as an overprotective father that isn’t quite ready to let go of his college bound daughter - who is played by Disney Channel favorite Raven-Symonei.

In the film, Melanie (Raven-Symone) is eagerly looking forward to her first big step towards independence when she plans a “girls only” road trip to check out prospective universities. But when her overbearing police chief father (Martin Lawrence) insists on escorting her instead, she soon finds her dream trip has turned into a nightmare adventure full of comical misfortune and turmoil.

While the adventure could have easily gone for R rated laughs and situations, since it’s a Walt Disney movie and rated G, it’s completely safe for the whole family. Finally, if you want to watch some movie clips from "College Road Trip" click here.

And with that….here’s Martin.

Martin Lawrence

  • Since this is his 2nd Disney film, I ask if he ever thought he’d be making movies for Disney when his career first started.
  • What led him to College Road Trip – he talks about his daughters
  • I ask if his daughters were fans of Raven
  • Improv talk
  • Standup and touring talk
