Let’s be clear, the reason “The King of Kong” did so well in limited release last weekend is due to one thing – the movie is fricking awesome. While I watched a recent press screening I actually heard people in the audience reacting to what they were seeing on screen… and trust me, that doesn’t happen at press screenings. And according to a friend who saw it with an audience last weekend in Santa Monica, he witnessed the same type of reaction in his theater.
The movie just hits you because you cannot believe what you are seeing. And after you witness Billy Mitchell, the legend of the video game world, you’ll see that he is the best villain we’ll see all year on movie screens. Forget any delusional psychotic killer who likes to go after kids… Billy Mitchell makes everyone look like an angel. Okay…that’s an exaggeration, but not by much.
And while I’m talking to you like you know about the movie, perhaps you haven’t heard of it so here’s the synopsis.
“The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters” is a new documentary directed by Seth Gordon, featuring two of the most focused ‘athletes’ ever to be captured on film – the slick mega-star legend of the video game world, hot-sauce impresario Billy Mitchell; and the mild-mannered family-guy challenger to the crown, middle-school science teacher Steve Wiebe. These two, as well as all the other die-hard gamers vying to conquer the likes of Q*bert, Joust, Pac-Man and Donkey Kong.
In 2003, 35 year old family man Steve Wiebe, after losing his job at Boeing, found solace in Donkey Kong. He began perfecting his game every night after his wife and kids went to bed, and not only surpassed Billy Mitchell (“Gamer of the Century” and Donkey Kong Champion), but ended up with a thought-to-be-impossible 1,000,000 points.

In the months that followed, Steve and Billy engaged in a cross-country duel to see who could set the high score that would be included in the 2007 Guinness World Records’ book and become ‘The King of Kong.’ Along the way, both men learned valuable lessons about what it means to be a father, a husband, and a true champion… discovering that you don’t always need to win to be a winner.
I’m telling you to go see this film. And if you’re someone who grew up in the early 80’s and played these kinds of video games…for the love of god you’ve got to see it. “The King of Kong” is one of the best films I’ve seen this year and one that rivals any huge 100 million dollar Hollywood spectacle. You’ll love the movie. Promise.
And while it already came out in very limited release last Friday, it’s going to be expanding each weekend due to its popularity. So to help you get ready for the film, here’s the trailer and 3 extended movie clips. I think you’ll want to see it after watching the clips below…
