While I was highly ambivalent when I heard that Sam Mendes would direct the adaptation of Garth Ennis and Glenn Fabry's comic series "Preacher" (an ambivalence that moved towards "dread" after seeing Mendes latest, "Revolutionary Road"), I am excited to learn today that John August would be adapting the 75-issue series for the big screen.

Some may find August a middling choice but since I personally love "Big Fish" and would point that he was able to adapt "Charlie's Angels" into a good movie, so I'm rooting for the guy.  The question now becomes, "Will he try to fit the whole series into one movie or just try to get the first couple graphic novels in there?"  You can barrage him with this question at his website, johnaugust.com.  I'm sure he'll answer.

For those unfamiliar with the "Preacher" series, it follows a young preacher who gains the power to speak with the voice of God, thus forcing anyone who hears him to do what he says.  He's surrounded by a colorful cast of characters including his assassin ex-girlfriend, a vampire, the Saint of Killers (who can kill anyone), a deformed man calling himself "Arseface", and a special agent who eventually ends up looking like a giant penis.  It's imaginative.
