Outside of a small group of obsessed "King of the Hill" fans (they're out there, believe me) very few people had ever heard of writer Etan Coen before this summer. What happened this summer, you ask? Two films written by Coen broke $100 million at the box office: "Tropic Thunder" and "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa". Now, any hack can get lucky with a family flick or a comedy, but what made Coen's recent work noteworthy was that, although very different, both of his scripts were actually good.
Proving that Etan Coen is probably getting his phone calls returned a lot faster these days, Variety is reporting that he will soon be writing a new family comedy for Universal. And here's the weird part – the script he will be writing is an adaptation of the board game "Candy Land". That's right I said "Candy Land": the game with the Candy Cane Forest that became officially lame the day you turned six.
Kevin Lima is on board (get it?) to direct "Candy Land" for Universal and Hasbro - the toy company that has also been threatening to make a movie based on their Ouija Board brand.
This is the kind of movie that would be a very bad idea were lesser talents involved in its creation. Lima did a great job on "Enchanted" and I think we've already been through the various merits of Mr. Etan Coen. I'm gonna remain hopeful that a "Candy Land" movie from these two will end up looking something like the South Park episode "Imaginationland" – with Queen Frostine standing in for Glinda.
