Is "Twilight" fandom waning? Summit Entertainment must think so. What else could explain their rush to get the third "Twilight" film, "Eclipse" into theatres by June 30, 2010? It's clear that speed (not quality since fans are going to lap up these movies as long as they get to see Robert Pattinson) has become the driving force. It was strong enough to boot Catherine Hardwicke out of "New Moon" and current director Chris Weitz won't be brought on board for the third film "Eclipse" because there's just no time.
It's funny when you compare these books to a series like "Harry Potter", which has been very methodical and careful in crafting adapting Rowling's popular books. Yes, the films haven't always turned out perfectly, but you knew that the producers cared and were trying to straddle a line between fidelity and practical adaptation. It's clear that Summit is trying to straddle the line of "How fast can we get these movies out before these girls finally grow up and realize how terrible these stories are?"
