Hollywood needs more female directors behind big projects. Entertainment Weekly's list of the 25 greatest working directors from a couple weeks back was ridiculous but it did inadvertently note how there are no major female players behind the camera in Hollywood. Catherine Hardwicke helmed one of the highest-grossing films of last year with "Twilight" but it would be a stretch to say that she could write her own ticket (she didn't even have enough clout to stay on the project because she *gasp* wanted more time).
So Entertainment Weekly's report that Drew Barrymore may direct the "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse", the third installment in the series, is, in a weird way, pretty cool. Barrymore's upcoming film, "Whip It!", starring Ellen Page, must be getting some pretty good responses if she's on the short list to direct such a major picture as her follow-up. While I'm wholly-indifferent-to-downright-sour on the "Twilight" franchise, I do think that any opportunity for female directors to break into the boys club of Hollywood directing is a positive. If it has to be for this franchise, well, so be it.
For those who don't know the plot of the third book and don't care about spoilers, here's Amazon's synopsis:
"Readers captivated by 'Twilight' and 'New Moon' will eagerly devour 'Eclipse', the much anticipated third book in Stephenie Meyer's riveting vampire love saga. As Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge, Bella once again finds herself surrounded by danger. In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between her love for Edward and her friendship with Jacob --- knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the ageless struggle between vampire and werewolf. With her graduation quickly approaching, Bella has one more decision to make: life or death. But which is which?"
