New Line Cinema has a big budget extravaganza arriving on December 7th, and to help promote the movie, they’ve provided me with 11 movie clips and two featurettes which help to explain the “Golden Compass” universe.

If you’re not familiar with the story, “The Golden Compass” is the first book in the "His Dark Materials" trilogy. It’s a fantasy adventure, set in an alternative world where people's souls manifest themselves as animals, talking bears fight wars, and Gyptians and witches co-exist. At the center of the story is Lyra (played by newcomer Dakota Blue Richards), a 12-year-old girl who starts out trying to rescue a friend who's been kidnapped by a mysterious organization known as the Gobblers - and winds up on an epic quest to save not only her world, but ours as well. The Golden Compass stars Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig and Sam Elliott, and features the voices of Ian McKellen, Ian McShane and Kathy Bates. The film is written and directed by Chris Weitz ("About A Boy").

I actually got to see the movie yesterday and have to say it’s definitely a spectacle. New Line Cinema spent a ton of money bringing the book to the screen and it shows. Tons of great special effects, costumes and locations are featured throughout the movie, but while I can compliment a number of parts, I did feel the editing was a problem. The running time was around 114 minutes and it felt rushed, with scenes that should’ve had more breathing room feeling condensed for time. I’m very curious what was cut and how much ended up on the editing room floor, because I think if the movie was around the length of a typical “Harry Potter” film (around 2 hr. 20), it might have been even better.

Since I didn’t read the books, I can’t comment on what was cut or changed for the transition to the big screen. But a lot of you are fans of the original material and I’m quite curious what you’ll think next week. Anyway, here’s the clips. I’m interviewing writer/director Chris Weitz tomorrow so expect the transcript soon.
