If you're a film critic and you write for an online publication and you live in New York, then you have ruled on what films and people are the best of 2007. As always, I will run the list, and comment as if I had any authority.
Picture - There Will Be Blood [Wouldn't be my choice, but I take no umbrage with it]
Actor - Daniel Day Lewis (There Will Be Blood) [It's unfair that he gets to compete. Can't we just give him a lifetime achievement award and assume that while he may be the best performer in any year which he releases a film, someone else gets to have an award saying "Best Actor (Other than Daniel Day Lewis)?]
Actress - Julie Christie (Away from Her) [She has Altzheimer's. I'm so tired of people with handicaps getting all the good stuff. They already get the awesome parking spaces; what more do they want?]
Director - PT Anderson (There Will Be Blood)
Supporting Actor - Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men)
Supporting Actress - Cate Blanchett (I'm Not There)
Breakthrough Performer - Ellen Page (Juno)
Debut Director - Sarah Polley (Away from Her) [Tony Gilroy says NO]
Ensemble Cast - Before the Devil Knows You're Dead [Again, not my choice but it's a solid selection]
Screenplay - The Darjeeling Limited (Wes Anderson, Jason Schwartzman, Roman Coppola) [It's a selection that's more interesting for how the screenplay came together rather than the screenplay itself; the screenplay for Juno flattens it]
Documentary – Sicko (The Weinstein Company) [I like Sicko too, but it's a flawed documentary and there were stronger selections out there]
Foreign Language – The Lives of Others (Sony Classics) / Persepolis (Sony Classics) [Could have sworn that The Lives of Others was released last year; I believe this because I saw it last year; weird, huh?]
Animated – Persepolis (Sony Classics) [I could be seeing this tomorrow but I have to earn money. DAMN YOU, CAPITALISM!
Cinematography - There Will Be Blood (Robert Elswit)
Film Music - There Will Be Blood (Jonny Greenwood) [I'd have to go with Nick Cave & Warren Ellis' somber score for "The Assassination of Jesse James" but I'll admit that Greenwood's score works beautifully within the film; just not outside of it]
