A jury led by Sean Penn and including Natalie Portman honored France's "The Class" with the top honor at this year's Cannes Film Festival. Director Laurent Cantet accepted the Palme d'Or for his film about the breakdown of society as mirrored by one year in the life of a junior high classroom in Paris. Winning in a unanimous decision, "The Class" became the first French film to win on its home turf since 1987.
The runner-up Grand-Prix award went to Italy's "Gomorrah," while best actor was accepted by "Che" star Benecio Del Toro. Meanwhile the coveted jury prize at the 61st annual Cannes Film Festival went to "Il Divo," a caustic look at former Italian Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti.
Feeling that there were just too many "amazing, amazing" films in this year's crop of nominees, the Penn jurors created two special awards to honor films that fell short of award status. The first was for Clint Eastwood's "The Changeling," which received the dubiously meaningful "Special Award of the 61st Annual Cannes Film Festival." Clint did not show up to accept this award, perhaps because he realized that wining an award that is specifically limited to one year would be beneath him. Catherine Deneuve, star of "A Christmas Tale," did accept her 'special' award, the equivalent of a lifetime achievement prize.
Here is the list of Cannes' major winners, according to Daily Variety:
