UGO has the latest "Watchmen" video blog where artist Dave Gibbons talks about seeing his art come to life in Zack Snyder's big screen adaptation of the seminal comic mini-series. While it may seem like a puff piece, if you put yourself in Gibbons' shoes, it must be somewhat amazing to walk about in a world that you conjured from your mind decades ago with no intent to see it adapted into a major motion picture. From this and previous blogs, it definitely looks like "Watchmen" will certainly be overlooked for Oscar nominations in costume design and art direction.
The attention to detail is stunning and if Snyder hadn't delivered with "300", I'd be worried that he would be doing what Robert Rodriguez did with "Sin City" in hewing so closely to the comic, that he adds no imprint or urgency to a cinematic version of the story.
And as with any new piece of "Watchmen" marketing, the countdown to March 2009 seems unbearably long. Even the time till Comic Con where we're bound to get some fresh stuff (fingers crossed for a trailer and/or footage) seems like an eternity.
For those just tuning in, here's a brief synopsis of "Watchmen", set to hit theatres on March 6, 2009:
In an alternate 1985 where superheroes exist, Richard Nixon is still president, and tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union are at an all time high. The vigilante Rorschach is investigating the murder of the Comedian, and uncovers a plot to discredit and murder various heroes. Rorschach discovers a far wider ranging conspiracy involving his colleagues' past which could completely change the course of history.
