The Hollywood Reporter has word that CBS is planning to re-tool the police classic "Hawaii Five-O." The re-launch is being helmed by "Criminal Minds" show-runner Ed Bernero – a self-described "Five-O" fanatic. Bernero is calling his take on the series "Hawaii Five-O 2.0" for now – we'll hope that his episode arcs will bring something a little fresher than that to the table.
"Hawaii Five-O" ran from 1968 to 1980 on CBS. It starred Jack Lord as Detective Steve McGarrett, who looked about as Hawaiian then as Dog the Bounty Hunter does today. The series had a significant cultural impact – mainly thanks to its kick-ass theme music and its familiar catchphrase "Book 'em Danno."
The new "Hawaii Five-O" will center on McGarrett's son Chris, and will continue to chronicle the inner workings of the fictional Hawaiian State Police squad. Bernero promises to update the stories without tampering with that "Five-O" flavor. "We will try to keep as much of the original show as possible… I'm not trying to reinvent it." As for that theme music - it will stay, although it may be tweaked a bit for the modern palette.
That will come as welcome news to the folks who attend the annual "Hawaii Five-O" fan conventions. You heard that right, there are actually "Hawaii Five-O" conventions happening somewhere in the world. And for those of you who missed the hey-day of "Hawaii Five-O" (myself included – it was on past my bed time) CBS/Paramount has recently released seasons one through four on DVD. Check them out - at least if you want your "this new show doesn't stand up to the original" critiques to be taken seriously.
