ESPN has just announced an eight-year, $15.2 billion deal, with the National Football League that will allow it to shoot Monday Night Football Games in 3D, starting in 2014. The new deal will run from 2014 to 2021 and includes a provision for 3D broadcast rights. While many, myself included, are starting to lose interest in 3D, I saw a post converted football game at Sundance and thought the 3D looked great and it definitely added a new dimension to watching the game.
The fact is, the NFL has never been more popular, as more and more are playing fantasy football. This new deal might spur regular folks to buying 3D TV’s, and in turn, cause more 3D Blu-ray sales and more TV shows to be broadcast in 3D. So the big question is…would you buy a new 3D TV to watch football? I’m definitely curious.

Nope!
I think I would much rather see sports start broadcasting in 48 FPS.
Hmm, lets wait 3 more years to use a technology that might be gone or vastly improved.
Seems like a waste. Do it now or never.

This article made me pause and consider it. I recently spent a grand on a 55′ Insignia LCD and am not looking forward to updating so soon just for 3D reasons, but I am interested in seeing what 3D Football, as well as Baseball would look like.
Well I am here to tell you that it’s absolutely AMAZING! The added depth that you see, really adds to the overall experience. It’s definitely a neat thing to see. People have to remember that the 3D technology of today, is to add depth to what you are watching. Sure the occasional “hand” coming out of the screen and slapping you in the face, sometimes happens, but that’s NOT what today’s 3D is designed to do. It is supposed to give you the illusion that you are actually there, like in real life. Granted, there are some movies that use it as a gimmick, and have everything coming out of the screen, but more and more studios are using it as a story telling device. It’s kind of like what Surround Sound did for Stereo Sound.
I love football, and I watch as much of it as I can. I don’t think 3D will add anything to my football watching experience. Honestly, I really don’t give a shit about the depth when I’m watching football. Unlike when I’m in a cinema, picture quality is one of the furthest things from my mind. I also think 3D is just a fad, and I don’t think I’m ever going to be willing to shell out for a 3D television. Just look at the box office numbers, more and more people are opting to see less expensive 2D versions of films because 3D very rarely enhances a film.
What Michael said. Don’t base your preconceptions about 3D football on the movies currently released to theaters. 3D football is shot in dedicated HD 3D, not post-converted. I watched some of last summer’s World Cup shot in ESPN 3D and it was much more impressive than I anticipated.
I’ve seen come demo footage and it’s pretty spectacular.
Can’t wait for NFL in 3D !!
I will make sure to have a 3DTV by then.
