Fans of Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy’s Before Sunrise and Before Sunset will be happy to know that we weren’t too far off when we reported that Hawke and director Richard Linklater were currently filming a third film in the series in Greece.  It’s been confirmed that the duo are in Greece working on the Before Sunset sequel, but no shooting has taken place yet.  As the first two installments saw Hawke and Delpy’s characters romancing in Vienna and Paris, perhaps Greece will be the backdrop to the next next chapter, tentatively titled Before Midnight.  Hit the jump to see what Hawke had to say.

before-sunset-ethan-hawkeHawke recently spoke to MTV about his current work with Linklater in Greece.  Although the new film in the Before Sunrise series was expected to film at some point this summer, it appears that the creative team is still in the early stages and, quote, “trying to see if it’s worth filming.”  Hawke went on to say that:

“We’re here writing a third installment to ‘Before Sunrise.’  If it works out, we’ll film it, and if it doesn’t, we won’t. It’s not really worth talking about. I’m just here developing.”

While he says it’s not worth talking about at this stage, Hawke does seem enthusiastic about the work he and Linklater have put in thus far:

“It’s super good.  We’re just here workshopping it and developing it, trying to create a great script.”

It must be nice to have Greece as a setting to workshop a romantic comedy.  It’s literally the home of muses.  What do you think, fans: are you interested in seeing a third installment of this romance unfold?  Let us know in the comments below.

As skeptical as I am about Linklater, Delpy, and Hawke developing a sequel to Before Sunrise and Before sunset, I cannot help but feel overwhelmed and excited about this potential sequel. Those two movies are my favourite movies of all times so I would like to hold them in the highest regard in my memory. If this sequel is anything less than stellar, it may undermine the previous two gems that led into this story. With that said, this risk is a risk I am willing to bear in order for another movie in this series. The ending in Before Sunset, as much of an unanswered question as that was, did not feel like an annoying cliffhanger. It left the viewers in a state of natural curiosity and delight in “what if’s” and “what could be’s”. Now, we could have that moment and those characters continue into another film and I would risk the quality of this potential sequel to find out if Jesse missed his flight or not.

True, Clayton, but, then, so did Before Sunrise. I’m confident they’ll rise to the occassion again.

AS a guy, i gotta say, i love theses movies. Im a bit of a hopeless romantic at heart, but they are quality films, and id love to see a final installment, taking place another 10 years later, a trilogy, for these two people, a love story spanning 20 years

These are the only romantic films I’ve really enjoyed I think, natural and believable without all the fluff and sad music montages that most films in the genre have.

I remember when Before Sunset was about to come out. I was excited and worried that it might ruin the greatness of it’s predecessor, but I was wrong to worry. In some ways it exceeded Before Sunrise.

While there is always a worry that this movie will not be able to live up to what has come before, I’m giving the benefit of the doubt to the trio of Linklater, Hawke and Delpy. They are too smart, and too invested in these characters to let their third excursion become something terrible.

I’m expecting something intelligent and which resonates for anyone in a relationship. Might we see the best of the three sometime late next year?

Since I miss the movies and charactors so much, I would not worry about the quality of the thrid one. I have nothing to lose. I will always enjoy it.
