Bruce Campbell Says EVIL DEAD 4 Is Finally in the Works

Fans of the Evil Dead franchise have been clamoring for a fourth film for decades.  They’ve imagined Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash and they’ve taken comfort in the Evil Dead-style “spookablast” of Sam Raimi’s Drag Me to Hell.  But hard news of an actual sequel has been scarce.  However, today offers the most promising news yet for Evil Dead 4Dread Central reports that editor Bob Murawski (Army of Darkness) has gone to Detroit to begin work on the project, which will be “a small indie thing like the first two.”  But when star Bruce Campbell was questioned by a fan on Twitter about the project’s veracity, he responded, “Believe in the remake, dawg! The project is real. In the works. Cool as hell. Scary as hell.”

I believe the correct response to that news is “Groovy.”  Hit the jump for my thoughts on the sequel.

There are some franchises that I believe should be left dormant, but I’m always up for another Evil Dead film.  Raimi showed he still has his horror-comedy chops with Drag Me to Hell and the storyline of the Evil Dead films thus far has been the loosest of trilogies.  It is interesting that Campbell says the new installment will be “Scary as hell,” since the last film in the series, Army of Darkness, ditched almost all the scares in favor of comedy.  The other question is whether or not this will be a true sequel or a kind of reboot that keeps Ash but sets up a new protagonist for future movies.

Finally, there’s the question if Raimi will even direct.  He’s currently handling Oz, the Great and Powerful and that film isn’t due to arrive until March 8, 2013.  Still, as a low-budget indie, I can totally see Ash wielding his chainsaw once more.

So, wait…it’s an Evil Dead 4? Or a remake?

His comment on Twitter leads me to believe this isn’t a sequel at all. Afterall, he does state that it is a “remake,” meaning no Ash at all. If this is the case, then count me out. An “Evil Dead” movie without Ash? Who cares?

Fucking awesome! I don’t care if it’s a remake. I just want some more Evil Dead. I’m sure Bruce will have a cameo at least, unless he’s older Ash and still the main character. Or maybe a cameo as older Ash….

The S-Mart bookends in Army of Darkness lead to all kinds of possibilities, with a weary, middle-aged Ash constantly put-upon by the deadites. I could definitely see that.

Oh no! “Believe in the remake, dawg! The project is real” is enough to show there is very little chance this will be the sequel the fans have wanted. more like crappy reboot, not directed by Sam and not starring Bruce Campbell with cgi creatures, no no no and no! This is concerning, though the fan in me is hoping this will end up being a proper sequel, there is no reason why not. Ash’s age would not be a problem either.

It will probably take place minutes after the end of the 3rd one

Evil Dead Fan 1: But he’s clearly much older in Army of Darkness than
    in the first movie.

    Evil Dead Fan 2: I know…weird

I hope Bruce is involved in a big way. I heard the story for Freddy vs Jason vs Ash and is sounded pretty damn good. Ash was gonna win, and that woulda been awesome.

Read on another site that Campbell is not yet confirmed & that this is going to be a remake. A low-budget film in the same line as the first two Evil Dead films.

A possible director is Federico Alvarez.

Never heard of this cat…but the site says that he made a short film called Panic Attack with next to no money.

I can honestly say…I don’t like the idea of that…but maybe…MAYBE it’ll all come out in the wash & like another fellow on this site says…I just can’t wait to see another round of the deadites.

What they should do is bring back Ash (Bruce Campbell), Set the movie in his hometown in like a near distant mid 80′s style post apocalyptic future. Then you could have Ash driving around in a wicked badass wasteland Oldsmobile blast’n on demons Mad Max style. Bong!

If it is a remake then of course the character of Ash will be in it. Why are people posting things like “if Ash is not in it….”???

The character of Ash was in the first Evil Dead, but more a supporting character. Evil Dead 2 was a rehash of Evil Dead. But, in part 2 Ash becomes the focus. Army of Darkness is where Ash becomes a wise cracking tough guy. The original Evil Dead was a far cry from Army of Darkness.
