It’s official: The Evil Dead remake is alive and well. Ghost House Pictures announced today that Sam Raimi and original producing partners Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell are onboard to remake the horror classic. Following Campbell’s enthusiastic confirmation of the remake yesterday, we reported that Uraguay-native Fede Alvarez would be helming the film, and today’s press release confirms the director’s involvement. Apparently Raimi and Tapert were so impressed with Alvarez’s short film Panic Attack that they signed him to a blind deal, and shortly thereafter attached him to write and direct the Evil Dead remake. Hit the jump for more details, as well as the full press release.

Alvarez wrote the script alongside Rodo Sayagues, and now Juno and Jennifer’s Body screenwriter Diablo Cody is doing script revisions. The film is apparently on fast track, so it looks like we’ll be seeing it sooner rather than later. On the downside of things, the statement says that Campbell will be onboard as a producer, but makes no mention of him starring in the film. Though it’s hard to image that the actor won’t be appearing in at least some capacity. Cody’s Jennifer’s Body was certainly an ambitious horror-comedy, but was ultimately lacking as a whole. Working from Alvarez and Sayagues’ first draft, her sensibilities may be just right for touch-ups on the script.

GHOST HOUSE PICTURES WILL RESURRECT THE DEAD

Original Producing Team – Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert & Bruce Campbell –

Remaking Horror Classic ‘The Evil Dead’

To be Written and Directed by Fede Alvarez

Los Angeles (July 13, 2011) – Sam Raimi and original producing partners Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell (who also starred in the original franchise) are gearing up to remake their cult sensation THE EVIL DEAD through their long standing Ghost House Pictures partnership.  Raimi and Tapert were such instant fans of Fede Alvarez’s short film “Panic Attack” that they set up a blind deal with the filmmaker and through that process have attached Fede Alvarez to write and direct the film. Alvarez wrote the script with Rodo Sayagues. Academy Award® winning screenwriter Diablo Cody is currently doing revisions on the draft.  Ghost House is committed to renewing the franchise and has the film on the fast track.

Raimi, Tapert and Campbell will serve as producers.  Ghost House Pictures partners Joe Drake and Nathan Kahane will executive produce. Nicole Brown and J.R. Young will oversee the project for Ghost House.  Lionsgate will handle international sales on the film.

The three producing partners commented, “We are committed to making this movie and are inspired by the enduring popularity and enthusiasm for the ‘Evil Dead’ series. We can’t wait to scare a new generation of moviegoers using filmmaking techniques that were not available to us thirty years ago as well as Fede bringing a fresh eye to the film’s original elements.”

Raimi wrote, directed and, along with Tapert and Campbell, produced the original horror classic THE EVIL DEAD that tells the story of five twenty-something friends who become holed up in a remote cabin where they discover a Book Of The Dead.  An archaeologist’s tape recording reveals that the ancient text was discovered among the Khandarian ruins of a Sumerian civilization.  Playing the taped incantations, the youths unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.  THE EVIL DEAD spawned a franchise with the equally successful installments EVIL DEAD II and ARMY OF DARKNESS.

Ok, F**K YOU Raimi and co! Seriously what is going on here. Talk about piss on your fans, unbelievable.

There is so much wrong with this statement… “We are committed to making this movie and are inspired by the enduring popularity and enthusiasm for the ‘Evil Dead’ series. We can’t wait to scare a new generation of moviegoers using filmmaking techniques that were not available to us thirty years ago as well as Fede bringing a fresh eye to the film’s original elements.”

Id like to say speaking as a true evil dead fan, that the “enduring popularity and enthusiasm for the evil dead series” is due to the original and legendary character and actor who plays him, the fact that it is old tech fx, Sam Raimi’s distinctive directing and its cult status…everything this remake will not have basically. Also to state basically how much of a massive interest there still is in the films, yeah from the fans, but then go on to clearly imply its for a new generation is a bit of an up yours to the one main group of people who you should be aiming at pleasing. So, thanks for that!

What is with this whole ‘for a new generation of moviegoers’ way of approaching film making these days. Its like the film studios are getting the message across to younger people don’t bother with the original its crap, but our one is all pretty with cgi and 3D, you’ll like that wont you kids.

Just make the god damn sequel that the fans want, coz there a plenty who will see it and just make it so noobs catch up with the story without having needing too much E.D knowledge.

    Need to breathe….

I love the trilogy, and was a bit eeked to find out that an unknown was directing, but I really do have faith in Raimi. The man isn’t going to mess up his baby (at least I hope not). What will, however, piss me off, is whether or not Bruce Campbell will be in it or not. He’d better. I won’t spend a time towards this film, if that’s the case.

This is fucking bullshit! Why can’t Raimi just wait until he’s finished the Oz prequel and then finally make Evil Dead 4 with Bruce Campbell? Raimi has already said that he wants to make a sequel one day, but no. Instead we get another bullshit remake of a classic horror movie with NO Ash and most likely no Bruce Campbell, or at least not very much. Seriously, this is just fucking stupid. Why couldn’t he just wait a couple of years?? this pretty much sets it in stone that there will NEVER be an Evil Dead 4 starring Bruce Campbell and directed by Sam Raimi, and it pisses me off. I fucking hate remakes.

    • nmbrh8er

I couldn’t agree more. This is fucking bullshit. Hollywood needs to quit catering to this wanker generation.

NO GET DIABLO CODY FAR FAR AWAY FROM THIS PROJECT. SHE CANNOT WRITE

    • The Train!

in this version ash is a teenage girl who finds out she got knocked up by some geek and has to decide what she wants to do with the baby. but then it turns out the baby is a demon and her uterus is a portal to the middle ages.

so you can see why cody was brought in.

  • Reid Wright

If Ash isn’t played by Bruce Campbell, there is no Evil Dead. You can’t replace him. It’s impossible. I’m sure Bruce would be up for a sequel. The trilogy is bigger now than when it was released, why not take advantage of that whilst maintaining some integrity in the series.

I think Raimi and company are in a no-win situation here. People have been begging for more Evil Dead since Army of Darkness, but schedules and the fact that they have other projects that make them more money (from Spider-Man to Burn Notice) have always gotten in the way. A lack of a good idea might have contributed as well. But now that they’re actually doing it, with an Oscar-winning writer doing REVISIONS, people are taking a shit on them (which was inevitable, I guess). I’ve always dreaded what more Evil Dead might bring, despite how much I DESPERATELY wanted it. How could they follow Army of Darkness in a sequel? How could they recapture the energy of the original in a reboot or a remake? Bruce Campbell is 53 and with a cushy TV gig, do you think he’s going to want to flip himself on his back and hit himself with plates for 12 hours at a time to recapture that original Ash portrayal? No matter what, new Evil Dead won’t be Evil Dead, be it with the original creators or new personnel.

So… I don’t know what my point is, but I have one (I think)!

  • Jack

What kind of movie would Evil Dead 4 need to be? The series became a farce comedy by Army of Darkness but started as horror.
Raimi has never taken these films seriously, so maybe we shouldn’t either..? They’re fun, and Bruce is fun, but… what’s the big deal? The triology will always exist for us to love.

The feckin marketing machine is not going to stop untill it destroyed every last authentic, personal and creative movie, book or music replacing it with feckin garbage passing as something new and edgy like Madonna, Lady Gaga or feckin Diablo Cody.. I’m so feckin tired!

I just came from seeing Solaris in a Exhibition/Art Center and it pisses me off that you can only this kind of movie in such context.

The only redeeming quality I see in this movies and sh1tty remakes of remakes of other remakes is that they are making hollywood destroy it self. Sooner or later all of these are going to be sent to the last pits of cultural memmory, sent into oblivion never to be seen again. Such is the destiny of mostly of the sh1tty movies or sh1tty books or sh1tty music created during the 20st century that didn’t add anything to the evolution of the human race (and man that garbage bin will be full..)
