A few days ago, Bloody-Disgusting reported that 20th century Fox was going to remake “Alien” and director Carl Rinsch would be helming the movie. Immediately fandom exploded with venom. I think one of the main reasons is that the original is a classic, and 20th Century Fox hasn’t been making films of that caliber recently.
So at today’s junket for Tony Scott’s new film “The Taking of Pelham 123″, I went up Tony after the press conference ended to ask him what was up with the remake.
The big news is he confirmed Carl Rinsch would be directing it and that it’s a prequel to his brother Ridley’s classic!
What Tony told me is after the jump:
Collider: 20th Century Fox is talking about remaking or redoing the original Alien. What’s going on with that?
Tony Scott: Yes, Carl Rinsch is going to do the prequel to Alien. He’s one of our directors at our company.
Collider: I’m going to be blunt about this. Fox has not been doing a great job recently with their movies. They haven’t been an artist friendly studio. Are you guys going to have some creative control and make this a kick-ass film?
Tony: Yes! But Fox is our home. They finace our production company.
Collider: And I’m very happy that you guys have the financing. But a lot of the films they’ve been doing at the studio level, they’ve been nickel and diming and not giving fandom what they want. So I guess my question for you is…are you a little nervous about reengaging the franchise or are you excited.
Tony: I’m excited cause Ridley created the original and Carl Rinsch is one of the family.
Collider: When do you envision this film getting in front of cameras?
Tony: Hopefully the end of the year.
Collider: Will it be a summer of 2011 movie?
Tony: Honestly, I don’t know.
While I wish I could give you more info, I only had moments to talk with him. Look for more “Alien” info as I get it.

It could be okay. I don't see why everyone's upset, though. If Alien 3, 4, and AvP 1 and 2 didn't discourage newbies from checking out the first 2, then this one certainly won't, either – their reputation is cemented.

rinch is a german director of music videos and commercials…Entertainment Weekly is currently running a really cool clip of his work (EW.COM) that is vaguely like original alien artist hr giger…dark horse paperbacks have some really well-done original alien novels including STEEL EGG by the tremendous john shirley which makes me hopeful the alien series isn't totally tapped out yet

Wow. People really are jaded. They're making a new movie. At this point the information available barely points to a premise. Stating that it's going to be shit or that you hope it bombs before work even starts is kind of pointless. Why not hope that they get it right? That way you'll get the opportunity to enjoy a good science-fiction horror film.

Do a new Alien 3 movie, and explain the failure of Alien 3 & 4 as Ripley's bad dream in space. Set it up like the famous " Who shot JR ? on the Dallas tv show ". I agreee it's a far fetched idea, but it's the only way Fox can get the series back on track. Also the A V P series took place way before Aliens, though I also agree that Fox screwed up mixing the two series together. I actually have read the Alien paperback series, and must say most of the current 13 books have good ideas for future movies. In fact, some of those stories are even better than what we got from Alien 3 & 4, and the A V P movies.

I love the Alien Franchise, Aliend Versus Predator is another story…but i think with the scotts involved, it will defenetly be a good movie. Furthermore, i believe they should do a remake. look at the new batmans coming out….they are a hudge success…hopfully this new alien remake will be like that.

There is no need for a remake. “Alien” being 30 years old still look awesome on the screen. In fact, it was filmed with such great lighting that the movie has not shown age. You can release the same movie in the theaters and still create the same effect, so no remakes needed, the movie does not look dated.
Fox wont want to go forward with the Alien prequel unless Scott directs rather than produce, and I am totally with them on this one. No more testing new directors, we need to get serious and not have another rediculed sequel/prequel. The fans deserve a well thought out movie. I’m a ‘let’s wait and see’.
As for Ridley directing it. I’m not sure that’s necessarily a recipe for success. Look at his recent efforts. IMO he’s made 3 great films. The Duellists, Alien and Blade Runner. Note that none of those are recent.
When James Cameron took on Aliens he wasn’t exactly a proven commodity. And that turned out great. But post Titanic I’m not even sure that he’s the right person for the job.
Listen to any dvd commentary from a great movie. Half of what’s great about a film comes from dumb luck. The finished product often seems like a combination of beautiful accidents & unhappy compromises rather than anything planned.
So I say give it to someone new. Someone with everything to prove. Then just hope everthing falls into place (script, casting, production) and somehow we’re given another classic.
Cause when you give these types of projects back to those that helped make them great, artists who have now moved on, had families and, more often than not, surrounded themselves with YES-MEN – you get bad results. You get the STAR WARS PREQUALS.

Its the concept of the Aliens, the Xenomorphs and “The Company” that makes the franchise ripe with possibilities. I would just like to see another good Aliens story. Sequel, Prequel, remake, cartoon, claymation.
Also, the events of Alien might not have been a first contact. As I recall, the android, whose name i can remember, was working for The Company trying to get them live specimen.
