Sylvester Stallone Confirms Mickey Rourke for THE EXPENDABLES 3, Possibly Adding Jackie Chan and Wesley Snipes, and Trying to Out-Raid THE RAID

Sylvester Stallone has developed a strong with his relationship with his fans.  Years ago, he did an ask-me-anything on AICN before AMAs even existed.  He’s willing to critique his past work, and he’s happy to share what’s happening with his latest projects.  Stallone recently took to his Twitter feed to provide some updates on The Expendables 3.  He revealed the return of Mickey Rourke by tweeting, “Mighty Mickey is back…..”.  Then Stallone teased a couple of new additions to the cast.  In December, Jackie Chan said he was on board, and Stallone tweeted yesterday, “What’s the plan? Ask Jackie Chan….”  And now that Wesley Snipes is out of prison, Stallone says, “Talked to WESLEY today … He can not WAIT to fight to the top again !!!!!!! Over…”  I’m sure Wesley Snipes’ stunt double will be glad to hear it.

Hit the jump for what Stallone had to say about The Expendables 3 trying to outdo one of the best action films in years, The Raid.

Adding Jackie Chan and Wesley Snipes is fine, but Stallone got into some fighting words (no pun intended) when he tweeted “Thinking about Raiding, THE RAID….think about it…”, and then followed that tweet by adding, “We believe we can do better than the RAID, which was an excellent film… Raising the bar…”  Stallone’s fondness for ellipses aside, trying to beat out The Raid is a worthy ambition, but I don’t know how he’s planning to do it.  Does anyone expect Stallone and his older co-stars to have the speed and agility of anyone in The Raid cast?  More importantly, are they willing to devote the same time and attention to carefully constructing the intricate fight scenes?  And is director Patrick Hughes (Red Hill) up to the task?  It’s also possible that Stallone is possibly just referring to taking the claustrophobia and setting of The Raid rather than trying to mimic that movie’s magnificent action scenes.

Here’s who I want- Hulk Hogan, Jackie Chan, Rober De Niro, Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Steven Seagul, Tom Cruise, Mel Gibson. I probably forgot a few, I don’t care if it’s a small cameo for any of them. Oh and I want the villains to be 3 modern action stars like Vin Diesel, The Rock, Gerard Butler, Channing Tatum, Christan Bale, Tom Hardy, Jamie Foxx. I want to know that 90% of this list was at least offered roles.

He reckons he can do better than The Raid? I like Sly but neither 1 nor 2 came anywhere close to The Raid.

The Stallone/Van Damme fight was pretty great

The closest film in terms of modern classic that matched THE RAID was DREDD. Not because it essentially had the same premise, but because where THE RAID had intense mano-a-mano combat, DREDD was visually stunning. Both films are IMHO the definition of a modern action film.

I thought Dredd was pretty ho-hum and the slo-mo scenes have been done to death. Give me the Stallone version any day, it’s bigger, grander, more exciting and funny. It doesn’t follow the comics sure but not like true to source projects 300, Watchmen, The Spirit or Sin City will stand test of time either.

A slimmed down Seagal and hungry Snipes would make a vicious antagonist duo. Get Mel Gibson in there as the shadowy CIA type instead of Bruce Willis and throw in a Gerard Butler cameo for the “young blood” (who also works for Nu Image) and we’re off and running! Oh and Michael Biehn should show up too.

Throw in Donnie Yen and we are good to go!

Donnie Yen would be too intense, Expendables series is held together by duct tape and good luck haha. Yen would actually want time to film some serious, kick ass fight scenes!

According to Stallone’s Twitter he is also trying to get Iko Uwais from the Raid & Steven Seagal. He is also considering Antonio Banderas.
