The Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them has been piling up on rising stars but now its put a veteran in the cast. According to THR, Colin Farrell has signed on to co-star with Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Ezra Miller, Dan Fogler, and Alison Sudol in the film.
For those who don’t know, the movie, written by J.K. Rowling and directed by David Yates (who helmed the final four Harry Potter movies), takes its name from one of Harry Potter’s schoolbooks, and is set in New York seventy years before the events of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Redmayne stars as Fantastic Beasts’ author Newt Scamander, and THR reports that Farrell will play Graves, a fellow wizard Newt meets in New York.
We previously reported that Fogler was on board playing a Muggle, Waterson was playing American witch Tina, Sudo was Tina’s younger sister Queenie, Miller is a wizard named “Kredan”, and it’s possible that Josh Gad or Michael Cera could play the Scamander’s rival, Jacob, but nothing’s been confirmed. The plot revolves around Scamander trying to track down magical creatures in the wizarding world.
Farrell seems to work best when he’s an ensemble player, or at least gives other actors room to maneuver. Now I’m curious that with a name like “Graves”, is he playing an evil wizard or a gritty good guy? No matter how it shakes out, he’s a welcome addition to the cast, and I’m eager to see him play against his fellow actors.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens November 18, 2016. Farrell can currently be seen trying to keep his dignity on True Detective, and will next be seen in theater in the indie film The Lobster. He also co-stars in the long-delayed Solace, which dropped its first trailer earlier today.
