Ok, then! Layer up, because FX is returning to Fargo for a third season. It’s not surprising that the anthology series has been renewed — Season 1 debuted to great acclaim (though not by me, as has been well documented), and won FX many awards. But Season 2 is the true masterpiece, which each episode improving upon the last in spectacular fashion. In fact, Fargo remains one of the most stylish and visually distinct series on TV, which is quite a feat given the rise of so-called “prestige” television. In Season 1, it tried too hard to achieve that, but in Season 2, it’s been effortlessly cool.

Eric Schrier and Nick Grad, Presidents of Original Programming for FX Networks and FX Productions, said in a press release that,

Year two of Fargo is an extraordinary achievement and, given Noah Hawley’s masterful storytelling, we can’t wait to see where the third, all-new version of Fargo takes us. Our thanks to Noah, Warren, Joel & Ethan, John and our partners at MGM Television for making Fargo such a memorable and rewarding journey.

So yes, series creator Noah Hawley will remain involved, with Joel and Ethan Coen continuing on as executive producers alongside Warren Littlefield and John Cameron. But as for Hawley's specific involvement, with Simon Kinberg stating recently that Hawley’s Legion pilot will begin early next year, could he be showrunning two series at once? Unless someone else is brought in to helm either one?

Regarding story, Seasons 1 and 2 were connected by a central character, Lou Solverson, played in the present day (more or less) by Keith Carradine, and in Season 2’s 1979 past setting by Patrick Wilson. So, we’ll see if Season 3 remains connected to these current characters in any way. Will we see a Fargo of the future, or of a more distant past?

For now, there are 4 episodes left in the current season, kicking off tonight with “Did you do this? No, you did it!” In it, “Lou and Hank investigate in Fargo, The King of Breakfast visits Betsy and Molly, Floyd is summoned away and Bear questions a family member’s loyalty.” Bring it on.

Fargo Season 2 airs Mondays on FX; be sure to read Patrick Cooper’s recaps, and also check out the cancelled or renewed status of over 150 scripted series with our TV Lifeline.
