First Trailer and Images for THE FAULT IN OUR STARS Starring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort

     January 29, 2014

20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for The Fault in Our StarsJosh Boone (Stuck in Love) directed the adaptation of the John Green novel about the relationship between two teenagers (Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort) who meet at a cancer support group and fall in love.  As a big fan of the book I’ve been looking forward to this movie for some time, and I’m incredibly encouraged by this trailer.  I can easily see Woodley knocking this role out of the park, and her chemistry with Elgort seems spot on as the central romantic duo.  Green’s novel is not a sappy, saccharine portrait of “cancer love”; it’s a realistic and sharp portrayal of a relationship between two young adults with a unique outlook on life.  Judging by this first trailer, the movie absolutely nails that tone.

Willem Dafoe, Nat Wolff, Laura Dern, Sam Trammell, Mike Birbiglia, and Emily Peachey also star.  The Fault in Our Stars opens June 6th.  Watch the trailer after the break. [Update: We've also added a handful of first-look images from the film after the jump.]

Here’s the official synopsis for The Fault in Our Stars:

Hazel and Gus are two extraordinary teenagers who share an acerbic wit, a disdain for the conventional, and a love that sweeps them – and us – on an unforgettable journey. Their relationship is all the more miraculous, given that they met and fell in love at a cancer support group. “The Fault in Our Stars,” based upon the number-one bestselling novel by John Green, explores the funny, thrilling and tragic business of being alive and in love.

wow mixed race kid this is 2014, okay. jesus christ didnt die for our sins so that you could sit around all day posting your shitty opinions on

      • Redjester

Jesus Christ didn’t die for our sins period. A guy named Jesus died, nothing more nothing less. No point bringing superstition into the conversation.

      • The Flobbit

No point bringing religion into this debate. Even less point trying to put down his faith on a movie forum. The guy uses a figure of speech, and you have to come along and be a dick.

That and it was a joke anyway, I don’t actually believe that.

They start the trailer off by saying it’s dishonest to sugar coat these kinds of stories and that they’re not all sappy…then proceed to show a super sappy sugar coated love story with two really good looking people that’s not even close to reality.

I don’t know, maybe it’s because I have ice running through my veins but some of the dialogue seems a bit too cutesy to me. The book seems to have pretty positive reviews and I think Woodley’s a pretty good actor, so I’ll reserve judgement I guess.

    • The Flobbit

The book is absolutely extraordinary. It’s funny and poignant, dramatic and ultimately heartbreaking. I happened to have read it in 4 hours, and I never read these kids of books.

      • Marisa

I’m reading it now and the trailer seems to get the tone and feel of the book. I hate weepy reads but the humor makes it easier. And I’m from the area of Indianapolis where the book takes place so reading about my city in a book is kind of fun, just wish they would have filmed here.

  • Strong Enough

they look like brother & sister. creepy

    • Marisa

Which is funny because they play brother and sister in Divergent which filmed first.

  • The Flobbit

If Shailene Woodley doesn’t break into the A-List NOW, with FAULT, SPECTACULAR, and DIVERGENT coming out, she never ever will. And god knows if there’s a teen star that deserves it, it’s Woodley.

    • Redjester

Honestly, I don’t think being a high profile celebrity (or what you’re calling an A-Lister) is in the cards for her. Not because she doesn’t deserve it (she’s a hell of an actress and is equally stunning), but because the core demographic seems to have already made up their minds about her. She’s like the anti Jennifer Lawrence in that teens seem to think Shailene Woodley can do no right much the same way Jennifer Lawrence can do no wrong.

That said, I do fully expect Shailene to have a much more critically acclaimed career than most of her peers, possibly winning a few Oscars along the way, so she does have that going for her.
